Health & Wellness Remedies & Natural Treatments.

Our health defines who we are. It determines the things we can or can’t do, where we can go, how happy we are, how well we can function, and even how long we’ll be around for. Our bodies in turn are what define our health, and therefore all of the above as well. While the human body may be complex, it can still be treated simply and naturally. Being made up of organic stuff like tissues and cells and blood, natural is really the language it understands best anyways. Instead of constantly reaching for chemical-laden medication take some time to try out less abrasive ways of feeling better, and help your health stay sound and wholesome in not just the short-term, but the long-term as well.

5 Home Remedies for Seasonal Allergies (Beyond Local Honey)

Dreading the change of seasons is the last thing on you should be feeling as fall or spring or summer approaches. It’s a time to be enjoying the gorgeous leaf colors, or kneeling in warm garden soil. It is not a time to be subjected to itchy/watery eyes, a stuffy nose, and all the other discomforts that come with seasonal allergies. While honey is a popular choice for a home remedy, it doesn’t always do the trick. These remedies give you a bit more to work with as you figure out what provides the most relief for you.

14 Home Remedies for Arthritis & Joint Pain

Our joints are what give us glorious freedom of movement, but being subjected to so much wear and tear (not to mention just the aging process itself) it’s no wonder they start to have problems functioning the way the used to. Be it rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, arthritis is a condition that is often treated with an abundance of prescriptions and OTC painkillers. Despite the “need” for these drugs, there are natural alternatives to keeping your joints healthy and comfortable.

Homemade Hot Pepper Cream for Arthritis & Joint Pain

This should be a go-to staple remedy in any household where an occupant suffers from arthritis or joint pain. The primary component is powdered hot peppers, which contain varying amounts of capsaicin. Capsaicin can effectively block pain, and here it’s targeting joints. There are 3 versions-the hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin it has, and the more pain relief you can get. That said, try different variations, you may not need as much heat as you think-nature’s remedies are strong!

11 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Canker Sores

Who hasn’t had one of these pesky buggers as some point in their lives? It’s no fun talking with a lisp, chewing on one side of your mouth, and maybe accidently drooling a little during a business conference because, well, you’re trying to accommodate for a tender sore on the tender inside of your mouth! Good news-a few simple home remedies can help you avoid these dreadful scenarios all together.

16 Remedies to Kick the Common Cold

For hundreds of years, the common cold has happily used us as unwilling hosts to inhabit. While a cold can be downright nasty, sometimes almost as severe as the flu, for the most part they are just something we have to suck up while we go about our lives. But just because they’re so common doesn’t make the discomfort and distraction they cause a very real and very miserable condition. Thankfully, nature has been providing us with means of relief long before modern medicine came along, and that’s what these remedies focus on. From coughs to sore throats, runny/stuffy noses, and all the other crud that can tag along with a cold, this list will address how to alleviate the discomfort of all usual suspect symptoms.

Homemade Vapor Rub for Youngsters & Adults

When you feel congested, that somewhat greasy little tin of vapor rub is one of the first things many of us reach for. But instead of reaching for one that contains irritants and chemicals, reach for one where you can account for everything that’s in it-because you made it! This rub works for both little ones and adults when a bad bout of congestion strikes.

5 Healing Honey Infusions for a Healthy Life

Honey heals. It can help stymie a cough or dress a wound. It’s perfect to stir into teas for some sweetness (and in this case, also the added benefits from the infusion) and for soothing sore throats. And while having just plain raw honey is a staple, I like to keep these infusions on hand as well to use on a whim. You’ll be surprised at how often you find yourself turning to them!

Homemade Natural Cold and Flu Inhaler

It sounds a bit sketchy, I know, but it’s not the type of inhaler that you think it is! An inhaler as used here is just another method of getting the benefits of essentials oils-and a highly effective one at that.
This particular blend will, among other benefits, lend your immune system a hand, clear out congestion, and fight off unwanted microbes. The inhaler gives you a direct and quick way to get the benefits, and it’s easily transportable.

16 Home Remedies to Relieve Constipation

We always hear about nature calling, but what if it doesn’t? What is there’s nothing to answer to? When constipation sets in this a question that many of us have to face, and we often face it alone. Before you give into that desperate I’ll-do-anything-just-to-go mode and run to the store, take a moment look around your house first. The answer to your bathroom woes may be closer than you think, and using an alternative to over-the-counter laxatives increases the likelihood that you won’t be feeling forgotten by nature again anytime soon.

7 Natural Cough Remedies for Persistent & Dry Coughs

Coughing, especially when it’s persistent, is incredibly frustrating. It’s uncomfortable, annoying, inconvenient, and exhausting. Nothing like having to break off an important work conversation because you have to cough every three minutes right? While it’s important to find the root cause of your coughing-anything from allergies to post-nasal drip to an infection-these remedies can broadly be used to reduce uncomfortable symptoms that can be quite similar, regardless of what’s causing the cough.

Homemade Honey & Onion Cough Syrup

If your first reaction to a cough syrup made with onions is to recoil in disgust, I ask that you recall the flavor of the over-the-counter cough syrup, that you may have been forced to take at some point in your life. Onion maybe isn’t sounding so bad after all? Especially with all the honey, this soothing syrup is a much better tasting remedy than the usual stuff, and it’s incredibly effective to boot.

Homemade Natural Spicy Cider Decongestant and Expectorant

When you’re really congested and just have to get all that extra phlegm and mucous out, you’ll need something that will thin the secretions to make them easier to cough up/drain out. This results in welcome relief, as it banishes the ache and pressure from congested sinuses, as well as helping to clear out any gunk in your lungs. This recipe is both a decongestant and an expectorant, and it does its job dang well!

13 Natural Remedies for Depression

Speaking from all too much experience, depression is hard thing to remedy, be it with natural remedies or prescriptions. That said, it is not impossible-far from it. While many people do need to take medication (which is totally fine, different things work for different people) some of us seek alternate or complimentary natural remedies that can take some of the heavy weight of depression off of our shoulders.

3 Incredibly Easy Remedies to Help a Dry Nose

When we think of issues pertaining to the nose, we tend to think of things like stuffy noses or runny noses. So it’s easy to overlook one condition that is capable of causing quite a bit of trouble without getting a bunch of mucous involved-and that’s dry nose. It’s easy to run for some tissue if you have to blow your nose, but what do you reach for when it’s literally just painfully dry? That’s what these remedies are here for!

Homemade Eye Drops for Itchy, Puffy, Dry Eyes

If you want to make sure you know exactly what you’re putting in your eyes, the thing to do is to make your own eye drops! I know, it sounds a little intimidating, but it really isn’t. It’s a basic solution that is easy to make and gentle on your eyes.

12 Remedies for Fatigue & When You’re Feeling Tired

You can’t go anywhere until you start moving. Think of a car-if you have barely any speed and you try to turn it’s a struggle, if not impossible. You can’t maneuver much, or get anywhere in good time. That’s like our bodies when we’re fatigued and tired. It’s a struggle to move forward and it’s near impossible to navigate life in an efficient or enjoyable manner. So, you have to start by figuring out how to fuel yourself to get that energy and momentum-and that’s where these remedies come in!

But assuming you’re able to fight off the flu and are just trying to weather the storm, these remedies will help pull you through and ease the symptoms.

18 Helpful Remedies to Relieve Headache Pain & Tension

Do you find that you’re all too familiar with that painful pounding in your head? A lot of us are. Busy, stressful, lives mean tension, and tension means headaches. So. Many. Headaches. Make Your Own “Soothing Roots Balm” for Headache Relief

How to Make Homemade Muscle Rub to Relieve Headaches

A tension headache may be the most common type of headache, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to deal with. I remember the first time I heard that headaches were caused by muscle tension-sometime in first grade-and it boggled my young mind that the pain originated from somewhere other than my aching head. But clearly the lesson stuck with me, because now I experience tension type headaches almost daily, and I get straight to work on my muscles with vigor. In addition to therapies such as massage and acupuncture, rubs such as this one also work wonderfully to loosen those tight bundles of muscle fibers, effectively reducing the headache.

15 Natural Remedies for Heartburn & Severe Acid Reflux

It’s as unpleasant as its name implies, but heartburn itself isn’t your problem, it’s a symptom of one. While there is no shortage of medications available to manage the burning, gnawing, aching sensation, relieving your heartburn may be as simple as switching up your diet or chewing a piece of gum. Try out some of these ideas to naturally treat the problem causing your heartburn, and therefore treat the heartburn itself, without forming a dependency on OTC management.

11 Natural Remedies to Lower High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) is insidious and more damaging than many people believe. We breeze by the free blood pressure checkers in various pharmacies, and hardly give it a second thought-until it’s actually affecting us personally. We hear the term so much (because it is so common now!) that we’re almost numb to it. But numb is the last thing you should be when it comes to your heart health. This list provides some natural ways to help lower high blood pressure, and hopefully reducing all the damage that goes along with it.

14 Soothing Remedies for Nausea & Upset Stomach

A bad bout of nausea, which would be any bout of nausea, can bring your life to a whirling, swirling, crashing halt. They can strike when you’re in a car, on an airplane, going to school, right before your wedding…pretty much anytime that’s the worst possible time to start feeling sick. Luckily there are a number of simple ways to manage the unpleasant sensation, at home or out and about, and get on with your life.

Electrolyte Ice Cubes for Morning Sickness

Pregnancy is probably the most demanding job asked of the human body. You are literally growing another human being, which is just nuts in and of itself, and you’re also coping with a myriad of crazy changes that your own body is subjected to throughout the process. One of the more commonly talked about “side-effects” of pregnancy is morning sickness. It can hit at any time of the day, so have a tray of these ready to help quell the nausea.

Make a Lavender Sleep Sachet for a Good Night’s Rest

The phrase tossing and turning simply doesn’t do justice to the frustrating feeling of being unable to get comfortable and relax at bedtime. With a mild sedative affect, lavender is one of nature’s best remedies for sleep. This sachet gives off the subtle aroma of the dried flower, making it perfect to place by or under your pillow to help you gently drift off.

When you find yourself waiting one out, turn to some of these at-home ways to help ease the pain.

12 Ways to Help You Snooze Without Snoring

Is snoring more unpleasant for the snorer, or the person sleeping next to them? That’s debatable, but it’s pretty much undisputed that snoring is generally not a good thing, no matter which side of the bed you’re on. Short of pressurized masks or surgery, not a whole lot can be done for snoring unless it involves lifestyle changes. If you’re always doing the middle-of-the-night elbow, or always getting elbowed in the middle of the night, try out some simple habit changes to help you get a better nights rest.

3 Simple Remedies to Get Rid of a (Really) Stuffy Nose

Everyone’s familiar with the sensation of a stuffy nose. We can all reluctantly harken back to nights of lying first on one side to let all the snot gather there, and then flipping to the other side to let it all drain back, hoping that one of the times it will just go away-or even just for the brief relief it brings. When you’re that miserable you want to get something together as fast as possible for relief. These remedies are simple ways to help alleviate that awful stuffiness.

4 Simple Remedies for Toothache Relief

A bad toothache can make it painful to do the most basic things we need to do to get by-eating, talking, and even drinking can become things you’d rather avoid. And even if you do manage to suffer through those activities, there’s still “the ache.” Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a tooth that hurts only when triggered, but a constant nagging ache is enough to drive anyone nuts. While you wait to get into the dentist (because there always has to be wait of some sort of course) these remedies will help relieve the soreness.

Clove Toothache Compress for Pain Relief

If you need a fast fix for a toothache until you can get to the dentist, it doesn’t get much simpler than a clove compress. With natural constituents that deaden pain, clove is the quintessential go-to for helping the ache. There are several ways to try it, giving you the chance to find a method that works best for you.

Stick to your routine, and you are well on your way to feeling and looking your best.

I love that I had already been a user of some of your remedies and will try out the others if needed in the future. There is one though I was wondering if you knew of a way to get rid of cold sores sooner and with less pain? The only one that I had come up with was putting a small ice pack on it for 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off for an hour and a half. It takes the fever out of it and causes it to not hurt for the time but after it warms up it starts hurting again. It does go away after a week instead of the usual 2 weeks. I am not always near ice to make a pack, so I wondered if there was an essential oil or something that I could make up and carry with me when I have a flare up? I am looking forward to hearing back from you, thank you.

  7. Joyce says:

My husband has servere hip pain and it goes down his leg into his knee, What can I do for him?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Joyce,

I am sorry to hear about your husband’s pain-it sounds dreadful. I would visit the doctor first to find out what is causing it to rule out anything serious. Especially if it is severe. You don’t have to take their advice, but I think it’s important you find out what it is all about before trying home remedies-you don’t want to make it worse on accident.

If you do know, where does the pain originate from? Is it from an old injury, a fall, is it in the hip joint itself? If the latter is the case, there will be an arthritis and joint pain list posted here shortly (it will be announced on facebook as well). Is it constant, or sporadic? The cause of the pain will determine how it can be helped/treated. One thing he could try would be taking turmeric capsules/supplements to help with the pain, otherwise ice and doing special hip exercises/stretches can help. There are also pain relieving creams and salves that you can try. You should only try these after figuring out where the problem lies-otherwise there’s always the risk of doing more harm than good.

I wish I could give you more advice but I am really not a doctor, and again, suggest you see one before trying anything at home. I hope he feels better soon, and let me know if you have anymore questions.

I just hopped over to facebook to ‘like’ your page, and I noticed you had shared several ‘health’ related articles (wart remedies, bad breath remedies, etc) that are not listed on this page? Is this page on your site new so not all articles are referenced/organized yet? I would love to see all the health-related articles you have linked here- it would be SUCH a tremendous resource! Of course I understand this may take a lot of work to go through and link to older articles, but it would be a blessing to all of us searching online for answers ;). Also, I noticed that you haven’t responded to the comments/questions above, is there a reason for this?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Heather,

Thank you for drawing my attention back to this page-I haven’t responded because I simply don’t visit it much and check for comments. I am still new to the whole blogging thing and have a tendency to check out my individual posts more often. I do wish I could answer everyone (here and on our facebook page) but being the only writer behind all of this it’s not possible-unless I stopped writing articles 😉

The site in general is new (started in late march) so the wrinkles in organization are still being smoothed out-thank you for bearing with us-for the longer lists (above 5, such as the wart remedies) those will be posted on this page. The shorter/individual posts go under “Seeds.” Again, thank you for your feedback, and do let me know if there’s anything else you have questions about 🙂
