Meet Claire Loving the Natural Life in Minnesota.

I grew up in Minnesota, spending my summers and winters up in a little cabin in the boundary waters. The time spent in those incredible forests gave me a deep love of nature and all of the creatures we share the world with. In truth, it is probably a large part of why I try to live a lifestyle that benefits me, and the environment.

It was in 2009 that I was inspired to start figuring out alternative ways to be healthy after my experiences with over-the-counter and prescription medication. After many years of many medications and many side effects and various complications with them, I realized that there were other ways to heal and maintain a healthy life. I began to see more and more that our world is becoming dependent on these medications that, in all reality, can end up doing more harm than good.

I am not a doctor by any means, but I hope to share my own experiences and what I’ve learned from them with other people. I want to spread knowledge on natural remedies, and restore faith in our roots. While it is true not all natural or home remedies will work, they aren’t the lump of useless folk lore many people pass them off to be.

I love getting feedback, hearing how one thing worked (or didn’t work) for somebody, and passing on their knowledge and experience. Do leave a comment if you have something to share, and ask me a question anytime! You can also send an email at claire(at)everydayroots.com

I take a lot of prescription medicine due to a lot of health issues. My husband and I worry every day how they are affecting me. All my family doctor wants to do when I have to go see him is try and keep adding more drugs. I don’t go to the doctor unless I’m really, really sick. I would like to find alternative to prescription medicine. Any suggestion? I would be glad to hear from you.

    Thank you,
    Barbara

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Barbara,

Ah, I can relate. There are so many medications casually prescribed these days that are so scary! Here are some thoughts based off of what I’ve dealt with previously…

Talk to your doctor: This may seem like a silly question, but have you flat out told your doctor you would like to be on fewer medications? Sometimes they just need some more communication.

Find a new doctor: Again this may sound obvious, but if you aren’t happy with your current doctor or feel as though they are not listening to your concerns, its vital to have the right one working with you. If possible, I would see a doctor that specializes in your conditions instead of a general practice doctor.

Cut out the little stuff: I always avoid things like aspirin or other OTC medications for minor things like bumps, bruises, headaches, runny noses, and the like. It’s one less dose of chemicals you are putting in your body, and I find many natural remedies work just as well for me. Getting a book or two on the matter can be a huge help for day-to-day ailments.

The classic diet and exercise: Perhaps you’ve already got this down, but when I started feeling like I was on too many medications, I had to change my lifestyle first. Without a good healthy base to balance on, there would be no chance of weaning off any medication. Its not instant, and it takes work, but it is a huge part of the battle. We underestimate the importance of those two things but put shortly-what we eat is first and foremost our bodies fuel, what you put in is what you will get out (literally and figuratively :P) and we simply aren’t designed to live sedentary lives.

I hope this was able to help some-I totally get where you’re at with all of this. Let me know if you have anymore questions πŸ™‚

*keep in mind that I am not a doctor, and you should discuss making any changes with them first.

Claire! Hopefully this site will be a great help to me! My mother is a dr and has been prescribing anti acids for me but they are not working, I suffer from severe acid reflux and anxiety (which don’t go well together in the mornings). I feel as though I’ve tried everything and I’ve been throwing up for two days now and I wanna know what to start eating and drinking on such an empty and fragile tummy.

        • Anya says:

Hey Cathy, I can relate to your issue. I will say that there are few simple things you can do for your stomach as well as anxiety. I always start out my day with chamomile tea and ouatmeal with honey. Chamilime is great for digestion. Oatmeal is amazing as well. For anxiety, end your evening with a cup of herbal tea that has valerian root, passiflower, and chamomile. Or you can buy valerian as drops. I have felt so much better! Remeber that nothing happens overnight, it’s not an instant cute but it doesn’t take long. Feel better. Anya.

        • Patricia says:

I seen your problem with heartburn or acid reflux. Vinegar has work great for myself. You just put a few drops on your tongue and it sends a message to your brain to stop producing acid. Try it only drops 3 or 4. Don’t do what I did I took about a TBsp NOT good but it worked for months, then I just did drops if it tried to come back works get for months. I read about it in a book the government has been trying to ban.

          • Irfan ul haq says:

            Dear Dear Patricia,
I dont know how to thank you and claire,I am cured by your vinegar Therapy.Best wishes for you.

          • Alan says:

Could you tell me the name of the book you are speaking of? I would like to read it.

          • Pam says:

Hi Alan, the book she may be referring to is:
“Natural cures they don’t want you to know about” by Michael Trudeau.

        • Heather says:

I suffered from this when I ws younger and stressing out over exam results. Apart from changing what you eat, the other option is to change your life and try and remove the stressor. I went to college and told someone ( a doctor) all my worries in confidence. He said I could try an antianxiety tablet, but just having talked to him and realising I could do what I was trying to do meant that I stopped being so worried. My weight improved, and my diet returned to normal as I stopped having the morning nausea,

It has returned once, when I was very stressed at weork at the same time as a relationship went west, but again, by dealing with the stressors, and changing my job and life, I got rid of the anxiety, and the stomach problems.

Now I’m a middleaged woman, married with two grown up kids and fat, wishing sometimes for that aversion to foods which made me lose weight!!!

        • alex says:

          Cathy,

You may not want to hear this, but depending on your age, you may want to have your heart checked. Often times, angina (heart pain) can be confused for acid reflux. My father used to pop Tums like they were candy, and we later discovered it was his heart. If you keep taking more and more anti-acid pills and can’t get any relief, change your diet to remove processed foods – especially carbs and starches – and have your heart checked out.

          Alex

          • Maria says:

            Alex and Cathy,
I agree with alex. Heart issues may be what is causing heartburn and severe acid reflux. You should go to your doctor and see if he/she can check your heart. And also no processed foods. Some things I find that helped were drinking smoothies- not the Jamba juice kind, but homemade ones. It’s a healthy, and filling way to get all of your nutrients. If you have been throwing up though, I suggest you rest and drink little sips at a time. That way your stomach can get used to having stuff in it.

            Maria

          • Sherry says:

Hi Claire. I enjoyed reading your ideas for fighting fleas on our fur babies with all natural methods! I’m so afraid of all the chemicals and pesticides in the store bought products. My question is this: why is only 1 out of my 4 dogs suffering from these persistent pests?

        • John says:

I had horrible acid reflux. I decided to eat two pickles a day…for the first 2 weeks, then 1 pick every other day for another 2 weeks. It worked for me…now my heartburn only happens once every other month, instead of everyday…I’m talking about those heartburn’s that make you clinch your chest and kick like a mule and drink a half gallon of milk. All’s good now πŸ˜‰

          • Susan says:

I had acid reflux for years, many years. I was on medication for years with no end in sight. Recently I found out I had a B12 deficiency. My stomic issues were symptoms of my B12 deficiency. Once I was receiving B12 injections, my acid reflux was no longer on issue, and I no longer required medication for acid reflux.
My point is I’m not saying that B12 deficiency is your challenge. Sometimes our medical issues are very complex. It may take time to work through your medical puzzle, it’s not always what we think it is, just don’t give up..

        • Aran says:

Hello Claire! Hello All! Cathy, with the acid reflux, from what I’ve read, can as said, be a result from too much acid in your food -search acid/alkaline foods- fresh greens are generally good, milk is slightly acidic once digested, do you live in an urban area? your tap water might be quite acidic if so, might be worth testing. also with the vinegar, apple cider vinegar can work well, I had a small shot of the stuff when needed and it worked great, or perhaps try Fennel (tea/whole)
I have found Meditation works really well for anxiety, plus saint john’s Wort can work but check if you’r taking other meds as it can have adverse reactions. get a good 30 mins in nature per day if possible too ::) fresh air and good surroundings could help ease both, plus foraging is always good, nettle tea is a good antioxidant. best wishes

        • Deborah says:

Crying helps. It releases the tension in the diaphragm muscle which is a major breathing muscle. Eliminate caffeine. Sleeping with your upper body elevated on a stack of pillows that are layered so they form a wedge shape with the narrow end approximately down to your waist.

        • RT says:

Cathy – I agree with Alex. Remove processed foods and white sugar! To be brief: vegan lifestyle + lots of water + moderate exercise + prayer = miracles πŸ™‚

        • Grace says:

I know what its like to have anxiety. It sucks. I usually get rly nauseous so I try to be rly still and take a tums, it usually works. As I am TERRIFIED of throw up.

      • Elaine says:

        Hi Claire,

Can you recommend something for topical eczema? I have a bit of it on my hands and feet mostly in the winter . Also have you ever tried or heard of eating coconut oil to cure some internal ailment’s like eczema? Just curious about you expertise in this area..I know you are not a Doctor, I read the information..just want to have more information than less.

        Thank you for your time,
        Elaine

        • Patricia says:

          Yes you can eat it

        • Taniya says:

I have had a few friends with eczema and when they changed their diet, it went away. They went on an anti-candida diet and had great success! This would mean cutting out many foods that feed candida and cause it to grow out of control, like all sugars. It’s not easy but it’s better than suffering with the symptoms of candida overgrowth. Look up anti-candida diets on line. The good news is you can still sweeten things with stevia so you don’t feel too horribly deprived. Ha ha! And coconut oil is SO good for you! I take some almost every day. It’s anti-bacterial and so good for your gums and your internal organs. Some people have discovered that it can reverse alzheimers. There are videos on youtube about it. It’s quite exciting. Start with a small amount, a teaspoon, and work your way up to more, as a large amount can give you loose bowels. I hope this helps Elaine! πŸ™‚

          • Cruzer says:

            Hi,

I was reading your post. My daughter has Eczema Ugh, she’s 11. If I may ask a few questions please. What is the name of the coconut you are referring? I would do anything to make her more comfortable I try not to put her Rx. I do more lotions it helps t times it can get bad so I put her Rx. to getting back in control. Do you know if eczema is a trigger for dandruff, if yes do you know what I can do to control it for her.

Thank you for any advise you can give me.

            Cruzer

        • Britney says:

          Yes u can eat it…….

        • Secret Santa Helper says:

Eczema can Let me help. Basically put on any body or hand lotion (non-scented) at night and cover your hands and feet with socks right before you go to bed! In the morning just peel the socks off and enjoy the day. After 2 nights it will go away but you have to repeat every 2 weeks until winter is over. Sorry about that, though that is the only idea I can think of.

I too have Hashimotos. I know how the panic attacks feel and what it feels like to be exausted all day long. For the last few weeks I have been eating cultured kraut and drinking both milk and water kefir. These foods have given me energy and stamina that I haven’t felt in years. You don’t want to over do on these foods so start out slow. I purchase my products at Whole Foods and other local health foods stores. A good web site for more information on cultured foods is: culturesforlife.com
          I hope this helps.

        • Terry says:

Joanne, have you done any research on the connection between Hashimoto’s and gluten sensitivity? I have a niece who has Hashimoto’s and since she cut gluten out of her diet her intestinal symptoms are under control. I wish you well.

        • Shannon says:

18 months ago, I had all my metal fillings removed, along with 4 infected wisdom teeth. Within a week, it felt like an electronic straight jacket had been taken off my body. Improvements were quite noticeable – more energy, improved thyroid function, slow but steady weight loss, elimination of heart burn, elimination of heart palpitations, reduction from 7 prescriptions to 1, clearer thinking, etc. These dental procedures started a journey that, along with a profound shift from junk to whole foods in my diet, also eliminated chronic pain. Key sources of information for me were GreenMedInfo.com, anything from Dr. Mercola, anything from the Weston A Price Foundation, and Nutritionfacts.org. I hope you find the answers you are looking for!

Hey clarie I want to loes a few pounds what should I do or eat because a diet dosent work for me

        • Tamsin says:

Peppermint tea does wonders for my heartburn/acid reflux. Vinegar, ginger/chamomile tea, and bicarbonate work too, but peppermint and ginger/chamomile teas taste better. I lost the heartburn and weight when I cut out all processed foods. I eat fish, poultry, grass fed beef, or beans with fresh vegetables and fruits, and drink lots of water. Eating “clean” and organic changed my body for the best. Added 30 minutes of yoga twice a week, 30 mins of pilates twice a week, and 30 mins of running on a mini trampoline (no back pain running on the trampoline). I had gained 25 pounds after a back injury. I’ve lost 20 lbs in 3 months and never starve. Snack on nuts, organic greek yogurt, fruits, vegies.

Hi clarie,im 28years guy having a constipation problems and some annoying noises from my tummy 24/7before or after meal anytime which is very irrtating

        • Amanda says:

Try eliminating some known irritants from your diet: dairy and gluten. Stick to eating whole grains (brown rice and quinoa), lightly cooked vegetables (raw veggies can be difficult to digest), small amounts of lean protein, fresh fruits, and nuts and seeds. Up your water intake to at least 80 ounces/ day. Start your day with a glass of warm lemon water. Try adding kefir and raw sauerkraut to your diet. Take a good probiotic every day and follow each meal with papaya enzymes. I’m easily constipated and all of those things, especially the water and probiotics, have helped me tremendously. Also, do some reading up on Triphala, an Ayurvedic formula that helps with digestion.

What should i use for a natural flea killer in the house if I have a baby?

        • Josyah says:

          Stephanie,
If you have pets that have fleas, don’t bathe them with other soaps, only Dawn Dish soap. The others are toxic

      • Dhiva says:

Hey Claire. I work on wall street. Lately, I’ve been experiencing severe sleep deprivation. Could you give me a herbal fix? I’ve tried the prescription medications, and honestly they scare me side effects and all .

        • Amanda says:

I also have a high stress career and find it difficult to sleep. Diet wise- eliminate processed sugar from your diet and all sodas (especially diet sodas). Eliminate caffeine. If you must have coffee, stick to one cup in the morning, but no coffee after 12pm. If you find you need pick-me-ups throughout the day, keep cold lemon water on you and try to drink at least 80 ounces a day. It’s amazing how staying hydrated clears the mind! Make a goal to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if it’s just a brisk walk. Next, begin to work on your body’s natural melatonin production. Very important- go to bed at the same time every night. At least one hour before bed, avoid “screen time”: tv, browsing the Internet, computer work, phone scrolling, etc. Lower the lights in your house and make a conscious effort to create at atmosphere of relaxation, even if you don’t feel tired. Practice meditation at this time. Start with 5 minutes a night and focus on your breath. Visualize your thoughts and worries simply floating by. You can experiment with herbal teas before bed: valerian, chamomile, “sleepy time”, etc. keep your bedroom cool- 63 F or lower, crack a window if possible. Use a white noise app while you sleep. Keep the same ritual every night. You need to train your mind to quiet down and having a routine will help. If you still have difficulty getting to sleep, try a Melatonin supplement 30 min before bed. I find the sublingual tablets in a low dose work best for me. I also really like a product called Natural Calm. It’s just powdered magnesium you mix with warm water. It helps calm your nerves and promotes relaxation. Finally, make time for yoga! Even a weekend class will help you eliminate the build up of stress and get you to start focusing on breathing. I hope this helps- it works for me!

would find a homeoapathic doctor , their out there . One who use natural ways only. limit all drugs doctor would prescribe .

    • Annette says:

My 18 year old daughter is a counselor at camp this summer. This past week one of the parents came in the cabin and put Essential peppermint oil around their little girl’s bed. My daughter couldn’t sleep that night as it made her nauseated and gave her a headache. She felt truly ill. She had to go in a different room to sleep and had to have another counselor watch her kids. This is the 3rd time my daughter has had a reaction to being exposed to Essential Oils.

      • Amanda says:

Essential oils can be really amazing, but in high doses, irritating. Peppermint is a stimulant, not sure why they would put it around the bed- for me it helps with concentration and focus and “wakes me up”. Every body is different, but it makes sense that a relatively large amount of peppermint oil would irritate her. Many people are very sensitive to fragrance, and your daughter might be one of them. Keep in mind that essential oils can be intense and there are varying degrees of quality. An excellent quality oil used properly can be wonderful and has cured many ailments.

      • Windy Wolf says:

Peppermint essential is also a natural deterrent for spiders. Probably why they put it there!

    • joy says:

I was recently told that I have diverticulosis for quite awhile. I started taking probiotics thinking it will help my digestion and constipation. I was also on ducolax and stool softness every few days. My doctor is now telling me to get off them and has given me across the counter clear lax laxative. But now I’m experiencing a lot of gas and more bloating then before. Do you think probiotics are part of the problem?

    • Rick says:

It’s no secret the financial relationship, between doctors and the pharmaceutical companies. While some medications might be the only true remedy for a particular health issue, how often do doctors suggest natural cures to their patients? It’s nice to see people like Claire sharing her knowledge with others, and I can attest to many of her home remedies. My advice is to inform your doctor of your knowledge of natural methods for your health issues, and if they tell you prescription meds are the “only” way, then find yourself a new doctor. Good luck, and stay strong!

    • Mark says:

It’s late here and I’m tired, but I want to share a story.

When I was 19 years old, I hitchhiked to Oregon from southern Minnesota with my sweet 7-year-old dog named Susie. She had all the symptoms of chronic degenerative disease from leading a modern unnatural lifestyle. her hair was graying she was overweight she had cataracts in her eyes, and fatty fatty tumors on her body. my family told me I was cruel for taking her out on the road because she was old and needed to stay home or she was comfortable and die.

I’ve learned a lot since then about natural health. studying and practicing; experimenting. I was hip enough to grok that whole wheat tortillas were better and I tried to eat the best I could.

      Longer story shorter :

Over the following couple of years, like Claire, I spent most of my time out in the cascade Mountains drinking pure Springwater and cooking food on a campfire. as I said, I didn’t know then what I know now, about things like oil and unrefined sunrefine

thanks Claire for the headache remedies, the cayene up the nose one may be a little much to bear but effective I’m sure. I wonder if wasabi has the same effect?
@Barbara, I recommend finding an Osteopathic doctor or D.O. instead of an M.D. They are trained in a holistic forms of healing that treats the entire body and not just to suppress symptoms. Also try acupuncture for help, it can be very effective for many common ailments. Many people do not realize that doctors receive kickback payments for the number of prescriptions that are filled for many certain medicines at the pharmacies. So M.D.s, especially, are trained in med school to be beholden to Big Pharma for a good portion of their incomes. Don’t get caught in this payola game of money for suffering patients hooked on prescription meds. It is despicable and sounds unreal, but my father was a pharmacist and the pharmaceutical companies have many ways of keeping doctors loyal to writing unnecessary scripts. If your doctor is like this and it sounds like he is, I would bow out and find somebody new and quick…Also consider naturopathy and other alternative forms of medicine. There are many cures out there, for things like diabetes, cancers, neurological disease and others that are suppressed by the “powers that be” so the money mill doesn’t die off. my dog has a open sore on his side it starts to heal an then he gets it raw again what should i put on it.

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

Poor guy, do you know what caused the sore? Is it a bug bite, a scratch, allergies? Has he had one before? If it is truly a sore and not a wound it sounds like a hot spot to me (Pyotraumatic Dermatitis-pyo meaning pus, traumatic relates to the self inflicting damage caused by biting licking or scratching, and dermatitis is inflammation of the skin) which can be caused by a number of things. If this is the case, its important to break the cycle of whatever is causing the itchiness (food allergies, fleas, mites, ringworm, etc.) otherwise it will just continue and get worse. If he has a lot of fur, shave the area because it needs to breathe. You can gently cleanse the area with a cool wet washcloth and, I hate to say it, he might need the ‘cone of shame’ if he absolutely wont let it be and is opening it by means of licking or biting. Apply a cool wet wash cloth to the area 2-3 times a day and make sure it stays clean and dries out.

I would hesitate telling you what else to put on it until you know what caused it-for example some people use wet black tea bags because the tannic acid can help dry out the sore, but if its ringworm or something less straightforward, tea bags wont do a darn thing and would quite possibly make it worse. A mild antiseptic like bedatine can work to stave off bacterial infection, but it wont do anything for one that already exists, or for anything other than a minor wound really.

You really don’t want a secondary infection setting in, which is quite likely if he keeps it open and raw. If it doesn’t seem to be clearing up or gets worse, a trip to the vet is probably in order. They can help you properly identify it and then you can decide how you wish to go about treating it. Whether you choose to follow the vets advice or not you will at least know what caused it, and that is a vital part of any treatment. Let me know if you have anymore questions-I hope he feels better soon. I have a pup with atopic dermatitis and I know how frustrating skin stuff can be!

      • Annie says:

        Hi Claire,

Thank you for educating people to help themselves! Re the woman who wrote about her dog’s sore not healing: it could also be skin cancer or another kind of cancer: hard to face but good to know. I think compulsive licking comes from lack of exercise and attention during the day (pretty common since most of us can’t take our 4-foots to work) which causes boredom/frustration/tension. Or I’ve read food allergies can cause it. Kibble that contains grain can cause allergies and they can show up as skin problemsβ€”same with humans. Licking is an attempt to heal it. If it’s pyroderma it can take a long time to heal, but my experience is it’s more effective in the long run to use herbs than the vet’s cures which mostly don’t work. I love Stephen Buhner’s book, Herbal Antibiotics, written for people, but look around online for an appropriate dose and give a few (3 – 5) of the ones he recommends (minus anything with potential toxicity) to your dog. My holistic vet says to pro-rate according to the dog’s weight but to add a bit more, since their metabolism is much faster than ours. I gave both topical and internal herb tinctures, alcohol and all, after a few months, it healed fully and hasn’t returned. I gave astragalus and ashwagandha throughout for immune protection, echinacea/goldenseal at the beginning for an immune boost. (It didn’t work, since you’re only supposed to give it for a week or so, and the infection was taking its sweet time.) I also gave yarrow daily throughout the 3 months–great for immunityβ€” and tiny amounts of minced garlic daily with food. Also ginger to reduce inflammation. It got better after 6 weeks and was gone after 12. Go herbs!!

  13. Wildchildwandering says:

Hi Claire, I just came across you formula for Hot Pepper Cream. It sounds wonderful, however, in my training under one of Maine’s few licensed, Master Herbalists I was taught that you should not combine any capsaicin with beeswax (except in a very minute quantity with other ingredients) due to the probability of burning your skin as the beeswax “coats” the skin more than an oil based formula. I am wondering how often you have used this formula and if you, or anyone else, have had any experience with burns, (not the normal “burning sensation” you would get when it is working). I am not asking these questions in criticism, I am asking them genuinely to see if perhaps what I was taught is correct, and others out there are finding better ways for pain relief. I once applied an otc brand of capsaicin on my feet (neuropathy), then put my socks and shoes on and proceeded to mow the lawn on an 80 degree day. I didn’t see the little part that says do not cover. My feet burned for about 2 days, lol!!! Blessings

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi there,

Thanks for your questions, it’s always good to hear about what different people know/experience-we wouldn’t learn much if we didn’t share! I honestly cannot say if your mentor is correct in their teachings or not, but I have used the original cream on sore joints enough to know that it doesn’t ‘burn’ me (my fingers tend to get sore the most, thanks to all my typing.) The other two I have used less, but still never experienced any adverse side effects (unless you count the color the turmeric can leave behind!) Nor has anyone else I know who has used these particular recipes. I am not sure how you define the base in a formula, but there is a decently greater ratio of oil to beeswax in the recipes, which would lead me to think that it is oil based, rather than wax based. The creams still absorb into the skin as well, at least in my experience.

Again I’ve never had formal enough training to say if my thinking is 100% correct, and I certainly don’t want to seem like I am doubting a master herbalist! But, in short, I have never heard of beeswax being risky with capsaicin, most any recipe you look up will include beeswax (if making a cream or salve, and not a liniment) and unless a person has sensitive skin that gets irritated by the spice itself, I haven’t head of a higher incident of ‘burns’ with beeswax being used in conjunction with capsaicin.

Also…yikes to the part about burning your feet! It sound like they should have typed that warning in a bigger font to me :p

    Hi

I have just been reading your topical headache remedy and it started me thinking. A colleague at work has gout and recently purchased Cudweed Tea at a high cost – AUD$40 for ten tea bags. She only used one or two however because she said it is unpalatable. I wondered if a topical balm can be made like your headache remedy – but don’t know how to incorporate the plant – or if such a product would have any benefit. Could she mix the contents of the tea bags (ground first maybe) into a mix similar to the above balm – and would the properties of the Cudweed she needs be absorbed through the skin?

    Regards

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Anna,

For a balm you’re going to want to avoid solid plant material so that it can properly be absorbed (and so you don’t have leaf chunks on your head) so I would use the contents of the tea bags and make an infused oil. Below is a link to our lotion recipe, which explains how to do this under “infuse you oil.” Just substitute the herbs we use with the cudweed. I am not sure how the benefits of cudweed impart themselves into oil, as I am not terribly familiar with the herb itself, or if it will do the same thing topically applied, but I think its worth trying! Let me know how it goes.

    Hi Claire,

I am interested in any/all information regarding psoriatic arthritis, which is totally different from psoriasis. I have both, along with MANY other health issues. I am so very appreciative, grateful for any light you could shed.

    Thank you!!

    • Betty says:

Randi, have you learned anything more regarding treatment of your Psoriatic arthritis? My husband has to take Enbrel injected once weekly so that he can use his hands and feet. It’s a serious and expensive drug. If we don’t qualify for it (financially) this year, he will be back to that painful square one. I would much rather have some natural treatment. Thanks and I wish you well.

      • Judy Fenush says:

Hi Betty, My grandmother was an RN and was born in 1916, she believed in natural cures and healing. She was plagued with arthritis and had to have a hip replacement in her 30’s. She was reading one of her mothers cookbooks one day and found an insert that said to take Raw honey and Apple Cider vinegar so she started taking it and within a cpl weeks was back to knitting and crocheting which she had to give up years before because her fingers were so bad with arthritis. I also take it and I am 55 with no arthritic conditions at all. I take a small juice glass add 1 Tablespoon of Raw honey then add a couple Tablespoons of hot water to dissolve the honey, then add 2 Tablespoons of the Apple cider vinegar and drink. Granny drank this 3 times per day, morning, afternoon and evening. I use Vitacost organic apple cider vinegar and raw honey. The great thing about it for me is once the pain in my knees goes away I can quit taking it and can go sometimes over a year before it starts up again πŸ™‚

Hi Claire, I’m enjoying reading these posts. It’s all so very interesting. I was interested in trying the Sleepy Time Lotion of yours that was referenced elsewhere on your site and you mentioned needing an immersion blender or a food processor, which unfortunately I have neither one. If I were going to make an investment of just one of the items (blender vs processor) for making homemade creams, lotions, and other healthy goodies, which one would you suggest as being the most useful overall? I’d really appreciate your input and thank you so much!

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Patsy,

So glad that you’re enjoying the site!! For making things like creams or lotions, the immersion blender my go-to device. I have found that it emulsifies the mixtures better than my food processor, which is vital to anything in which you are blending an oil and water together. it’s also faster, and makes less mess. Mine has a great whisk attachment as well that works a treat, and I think there are a few more various attachments you can get that make it very versatile πŸ™‚ let me know if you have anymore questions!

  19. Louie says:

    Claire,
I was wondering what is the “best” honey to buy other than from a real beekeeper ?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

Ah, the intricacies of honey. I could go on for awhile about this, but I’ll spare you :p
Brand/company and type of honey (clover, manuka, etc.) are up to you, the most important thing is to just make sure its 100% raw and organic. Not heated, pasteurized, or anything of the like. Commercial honey that looks all pretty sitting on the shelves has just been filtered and sucked of nutrients/enzymes to help it keep and make it look appealing and “clean”, versus raw honey which is going to be cloudy, possibly even crystallized. Your best bet on finding raw honey if you can’t get it straight from a bee farm would be to check a co-op (if you have one) or a farmers market (also if you have one.) There are some grocery stores that sell it, but not many. It’s worth the hunt though. If that fails, you can try ordering online. Doing some research on different brands/companies will help you determine which one stays truest to the honey and preserves all its natural benefits (I don’t personally know enough about them to give much guidance, since I get mine locally.) Let me know if you have anymore questions!

what do I need to worry about supplementing in my diet if I don’t eat meat?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Mary,

Protein, iron, and vitamin B-12 are found in high concentrations in meat, so I would focus on other sources to supplement those with. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, soy, and eggs contain plenty of protein. I would suggest dark, leafy green veggies and legumes for your iron. To clarify, are you pescetarian? If you are, fish like salmon is a good way to get vitamin B-12, if not, I would find a high quality supplement in capsule or tablet form to get what you need. Of course I am just scratching the surface, the options of a vegetarian diet stretch far beyond what I’ve listed here. If you haven’t yet, there are quite a few interesting books on being vegetarian out there to check out πŸ™‚

Claire is there any natural bug repellent that doesn’t smell awful and i can actually wear all the time that won’t make me have a skin reaction to. We have been fighting with fleas and are actually starting to win thanks to your 6 steps..the only problem is they really like to eat me….now they’re fleeing the pups onto my legs.. any ideas?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

Oh that’s no fun! I am glad the remedies are helping your dogs, but it stinks they’re turning to you now. The good news is fleas can’t actually live on people, only bite them. This means you need to focus hard on the source, which is most likely your carpets, beds, curtains, etc. (and of course keep up with the pups.) If you have one, your vacuum is your best friend now, use it multiple times a day to suck up eggs and fleas and make sure to empty the bags right away and take out the trash. Wash all your bedding in hot water, wash yourself in hot water (but not too hot) and try mixing some lemon juice with water and spraying it on your legs. Again though, you’ll want to focus more on the source to keep them from coming back. There’s also something called Diatomeceous Earth that you can use to kill them off, which is a fine powder that basically absorbs fats from the fleas exoskeleton and dehydrates them. If you use DE, make sure it is food grade and uncalcinated (not heat treated.) I hope this helps!

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Stacy,

Congrats on your baby! As far as your tummy goes, the uterus does not, at any point, contain gas. If you are bloated all the time due to gas it’s in your stomach and GI system, which can “push” your abdomen outwards.
Is your belly still somewhat hard, or is it soft? I have heard of something called Diastasis Recti, which you could ask your doctor about if it sounds like what you’re experiencing. It is basically the walls of the abdomen stretching apart, which sometimes causes a bulge that can last awhile. I really don’t have a wide base of knowledge on it though. If you’ve ruled this out, or any other underlying condition, I would look into core routines to help ‘lower’ your stomach and tone your muscles. Its well worth your time to look into specific exercises that cater to changes post-pregnancy.
In short, strengthening your core and relieving regular gas/bloating (if you have it) would be solid routes to follow. Those are just ideas though-before trying anything, check in with your OB/GYN or doctor πŸ™‚

  27. joe says:

Hello. I was wondering besides dog food….what other foods can I feed my small adult dogs for there meals.
Right now I do white rice with carrots. And sometimes boiled chicken without the skin and bones.
    Thank you in advance.

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Joe,

Are you currently feeding kibble mixed in with the rice and carrots? For my dogs I mix it up fairly often, adding a little bit of scrambled eggs (a small amount), cottage cheese, flax seed, carrots, apples, bananas, plain yogurt, sweet potatoes and green beans (to name a few) to a rotational dry food that is grain-free. Of course its always trial and elimination if she’ll be ok with certain foods or not. Some dogs don’t do well with eggs while some do, one might react to apples but another doesn’t, so its all about what works for her. No matter what, always start with small amounts and work up from there. If you want to do a raw diet (no kibble) than you need to make sure your pup is getting full balanced nutrition from her meals, and that you know where your meat comes from, otherwise it often contains what the animals were pumped full of, like various growth hormones etc.

Avocado, onions, garlic, raisins/grapes, macadamia nuts and peaches/plums/persimmons are some raw foods you should steer clear of. Let me know if you have anymore questions, and good for you for branching out on what you feed your pup!

Claire, I am enjoying reading your posts . Thanks for sharing . One of the best books I have ever read on natural remedies is , Back To Eden by Jethro Kloss. Written in 1939 Jethro Kloss wanted everyone to know how to enjoy healthy living by using what God had placed on this earth for healing our bodies and minds. I have found that most natural remedies do work , not overnight , but gradually , allowing the body time to heal .

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

Thank you for sharing! I’ll have to check it out πŸ™‚ and yes, that is very true about how natural remedies work…its sad that we’ve just developed a society where everyone wants an instant cure at their fingertips, even if it means sacrifices health in the long run.

  29. Laura says:

Hi Claire – Love your wisdom and the many ways you share it! I was reading most recently about companion planting, and as much as I love the concept I’m frustrated by all the gophers in my yard – can’t plant lettuce, strawberries, squash, etc. in the ground (only containers.) We have lots of wildlife in our yard and we love that – the birds, raccoons, oppossums, coyotes, etc. were here before we were, after all – so we don’t want to kill the gophers, but it sure makes growing a garden difficult! Do you have any suggestions? I have tried the in-ground, battery operated gopher repellant stakes with limited success, but I’m not happy about using all those batteries! Any ideas will be most appreciated!

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Laura,

I am so glad you’re enjoying the site! Yikes to the gopher problem though, they’re tough little buggers, but I agree with you on the whole wiping them thing. So many people go straight to pouring things like ammonia in their holes-that doesn’t even keep them away forever though- and who knows what else you’re harming. When gophers get poisoned, they can harm the creatures that eat them (bobcats, dogs, etc.) and that’s a whole other mess. Not to mention they really are vital to the ecology of the land. There are a few ways I know to try getting rid of them, none are fool-proof, but vigilance and a combination of techniques seems to be fairly successful.

-Euphorbia lathyris also known as “gopher plant” or caper surge, exudes a noxious smell/is poisonous to gophers. One handy thing about the plant is that its roots give off the smell as well, so gophers are discouraged from simply tunneling around them. They are annual, but pretty hardy. The gophers are generally smart enough to not eat them, therefore it doesn’t really poison them. They just know to stay away.

-Raising your garden beds (if possible) is a good deterrent. They don’t like venturing far from their burrows, and don’t seem to have the tenacity to crawl up one or try to tunnel around the underground wire. I myself have never built one, but I think its a great idea. I am sure a local nursery or gardening store could help you get started πŸ™‚

-Natural “predators” will be a strong deterrent for gophers. If possible, try getting a cat that can be outdoors at least some times, or a dog that you can let romp in the yard. They will not want to be building their homes where they get hunted. When I come home from vacation rabbits have usually overrun my yard…a few days with my dogs marching around and they don’t come near it.

-Planting poppies or sunflowers a ways away from your main garden is one way to lessen the problem, but it wont get rid of the creatures. A lot of times they get so distracted stuffing the seeds in their mouth they ignore the other, harder to reach plants. In conjunction with this, using a strong “gopher mesh” to line your garden can help steer them away.

It’s such a bummer when garden problems like this crop up (no pun intended) but it’s great you’re going about it this way. Waging “war” on them does nothing but harm. We share the land πŸ™‚ i hope some of these ideas helped!

    Hi Claire,

    Monica from Australia here.
Could you give me a suggestion about itchy ears please?
My ears have been very itchy on and off over the years, and I ended up to the doctors with infections every now and then due to the fact that i can’t stop scratching the inside of my ears, even wake up during the night from my own scratching!
I use cotton sticks and sometimes even harder objects to reach better and scratch the insidem as it is too itchy. I know there is no wax left in it. I know it’s wrong, the doctor told me no to enter the ear at all, but I can’t help it.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    Monica

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Monica,

That sounds awful! I can definitely relate to itchy ears, I have to sleep with ear plugs some nights and they can wake me and make my ears irritated. Its true that continuing to scratch them will make them worse-the skin inside the ears is so thin and sensitive if you scratch them it perpetuates the cycle. It will take a bit of self control (I know it can drive you crazy) but it will be worth it in the end. You can try tilting your head and dripping a few drops of olive oil in there to coat the irritated skin and ease the itch, and infusing it with garlic (not actually having any pieces of garlic in the oil) can help fight off a mild fungal infection. After letting it settle in your ear for a few minutes, tilt your head and let the excess drain back out onto a paper towel. Using olive oil will also be less likely to dry out your ears, and dryness can cause itchiness. Do that daily until the itchiness is relieved and then do a weekly follow up if it helps.Try to avoid getting irritants in there like a bunch of shampoo if you think you have extra sensitive ears. Diluting a small drop of tea tree oil in a drop of olive or almond oil helps as well, since tea tree works as an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

I hope some of this helped-nobody really knows just how crazy itchy ears can drive you until they experience it themselves. Feel better!

    Claire,

I am a type 2 diabetic and have managed to maintain a weight loss of 30-ish pounds since I was diagnosed 5 years ago. I still have another 50-ish pounds to lose before I can cut down on some of my medicine. I am not insulin dependent; I take an oral medication twice a day. However, I am also receiving treatment for depression. The two seem to go hand-in-hand – my job is mentally draining, making me feel down, causing me insomnia, which in turn makes it difficult for me to find the energy to exercise and eat right. Hi Claire,
I have come upon your site here while looking for a remedy for my terrible (and chronic) heartburn/acid indigestion. I have tried about every single recipe you wrote about, to no avail πŸ™
I am burning so bad right now that I really can barely stand it. I am currently on prescription Protonix due to a medium sized hiatal hernia and two ulcers. I have tried adding Zantac and Tums. Nothing is helping. I feel like holes are being burned through my mouth, esophagus, chest and stomach. Oh, and I also have Burning Tongue Syndrome.
Anyway, my mother-in-law was from Minnesota and we have visited there. I was born, raised and still live in Florida and I can tell you honestly, that I have never, ever been so cold in my entire life as the week I spent in Minnesota between Christmas and New Year’s, 1999 (Minneapolis/Twin Cities/Brainerd). I have heard of your monster mosquitoes but fortunately, never saw them! We have our own mosquitoes here in Florida and those of us who have been here forever, are called Mosquito Beaters and we have an annual reunion πŸ™‚

    • Razzle says:

      Hi Terri,

Burning tongue may be caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency. I find my own heartburn responds well to Vitamin B12 and Molybdenum supplements, as my heartburn was caused by sulfites (preservatives) in foods, and the body uses molybdenum and Vitamin B12 to process sulfites.

And ulcers are usually caused by h. pylori infection. Myrrh gum and Mastic gum (check a health food store or online iherb.com or vitacost.com) can help with this.

      I hope this helps…take care,

Hi Claire, I have been having problems with un-controlable acne, usually my face doesn’t break out this bad as it has been doing for the last few weeks, I need some help, I read your article on 22 remedies for clearing up acne/ blemishes. It was helpful!! But do you have any remedies for if I am going to bed? Do you think olive oil would work? Should i just rub that into my face then go to sleep? I also have a problem with picking at/ popping my pimples. I can’t help it though, I want my blemishes to whine down for awhile. My peers at school always talk about how “jacked” up my face is (referring to my blemishes/acne) do you have any advice for keeping myself under-control form touching and picking at my acne? I left my mom’s email so you can get back to me if i’m not around, P.S You sound like an INSPIRING soul! πŸ™‚ Sanaa 11 yrs. old M.O

Hi Claire! I too am from MN and LOVE dogs!!! I have 3. They are getting older now. 11, 9 and 6 and I am trying to get them off chemicals if possible. I feed them Merrick Grain free, give digestive enzymes and probiotics. I just hate having them on Trifexis/advantage, etc. Thing is I now live in Florida and Heartworm is very prevalent here. Many dogs picked up by animal control test positive. Also, have warm weather all year round with big fiesty fleas. I have never had a flea problem. I had them on Advantage multi and then swithced to Trifexis Oral due to dog to dog exposure of topical treatment getting one of my dogs ill, even after as much as 12 hours after application. Trifexis works on heart worms and fleas. How effective are these flea treatments in places like Florida and is there natural heartguard prevention out there?

Thanks for your blog. Glad that I stumbled across it.

    • Claire Goodall says:

Yay for MN dog lovers! I can’t say for sure how they’d work in FL as I’ve never taken my dogs there, but I can’t imagine it would be much different-although I suppose you have to deal with the buggers year round since you don’t get the deathly cold winters. In terms of natural heartworm preventative, unfortunately, there really isn’t one. Using the medication is the lesser of two evils in this case-heartworm can and will kill a dog, and that’s just not a risk worth taking. I hope the flea remedies help!

Claire , thank you so much for taking your time to share so much of your knowledge with us Readers.
I have a few questions for you. when fresh fruits are so very expensive can you substitute them with frozen fruit and get the same nutritional benefits? also , I see a lot of people buying powders that you mix up with water saying they have all the same content in them as fresh fruits and veggies. and that your daily dose of is in them. there are a couple of different ones I have seen people trying to sell . have you heard of these? I have been making smoothies with spinach , kale, banana, frozen strawberry, blueberry, yogurt and whey protein. these are yummy and healthy..

  47. Teri Dent says:

Question about your flea prevention remedy. Put 1 teas. apple cider vinegar in 1 qt. of water how often? Everyday?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

However often you re-fill their water dish. Put a teaspoon in 1 qt (for every 40 pounds) every time they get fresh water. You probably want to avoid just adding more ACV to old water because you won’t know the exact liquid measurements. Hope this helped clear your question up for you!

I am trying to live a greener life. I am trying to cut out all gluten. I have also stopped using poisonous deodorant. I am eating more fruits and veggies. No processed meats. And no dairy products. Processed foods are gone. I did have Blue Diamond Nut Crackers. More nuts. Local grapes have been a treat. I am now getting little itchy red bumps, mostly forearms, a patch on my thigh, couple on cheek. My arm pits have gotten cyst like bumps under the skin that are swollen and painful. One will come and go away. I have one under there now. Do you think this could possible be detox symptoms?

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Kim,

Good for you for cutting all that stuff out of your diet! That is not an easy thing to do. It’s quite possible that what you’re experiencing is a symptom of your body adjusting to the sudden exclusion of all the processed foods. If I had to narrow it down to one culprit I would say its the removal of gluten, but it sounds like you still have some in your diet, so its more likely a combination of everything. Sugar and other constituents of processed food are almost like a drug to our bodies, and its not uncommon for there to be what you could call “withdrawal symptoms” when you stop eating them. Like any abrupt change in lifestyle, switching to a healthier diet can make you “worse” before you get better (just consider what a large part of our lives gluten/processed food is to our daily lives) but if the bumps don’t clear up I would talk to a nutritionist or professional that really knows this stuff-it gets pretty complex.
Do keep in mind that it could be something other detox symptoms, in which case a doctor or a dermatologist would be your best bet. Remember that your body is going through a major change, and keep up the awesome job!

    Hi Claire,
I read your page on 15 natural remedies for acid reflux.
I have been experiencing acid reflux for about a month now and my doctor says I am suffering from GERD. He prescribed me Rabeprazole once daily for 15 days. I did not recover in that period so I consulted another doctor and he says I have to take it twice daily for 2 months. Some people say that so much of medication is very dangerous for the body. I do not know what to do. I have this strange feeling in my throat after eating that I feel that something is struck there and sometimes I feel like I am choking on my food. Swallowing food is easy. Swallowing spit or liquids or water is somewhat difficult and there is a sharp cutting sensation in the throat.
I read your remedies and I am trying a few out. Hopefully I am thinking of cutting down on medication partly and seeing if these help me or not.
I just wanted to ask if you have any advice for me which I can follow.
    Thank you.

    • Yashaswi says:

Also, apart from the problems in my throat which is making it difficult for me to live peacefully, my stomach feels unusually tight sometimes and it is very irritating.

      • Betty says:

Last year I decided to lose a few pounds and I chose a diet somewhat like the Atkins diet. I ate only 20 gr of carbs daily, those coming from leafy greens and no-starch veggies. I ate lots and lots of protein. I didn’t limit my eggs, fish, meat intake. I found that as long as I adhered to that diet, I didn’t have any acid reflux at all. When I stopped the high protein diet, the acid reflux returned. Needless to say, I no longer doubt what works for me and about four days a week, I follow the high protein diet that did indeed help me lose weight and eliminated my acid reflux. I know how important it is to control this condition, since a close friend is suffering from esophageal cancer from his acid reflux. Not trying to alarm you….just saying.

    • Betty says:

I don’t know if you have had any replies to your comment, but my aunt works in a care facility says that white vinegar can be useful in many instances. She says that if you will soak your feet in straight vinegar for about ten minutes twice a day for about a week, the fungus will go away. I tried this when I contracted a nail fungus at a pedicure salon and it worked for me. Good luck.

Hi Claire – I have a large garden as do most of the people in my neighborhood. For about 3 years, we have all suffered loss due to squash bugs. We all garden organically and have tried the natural remedies like warm soapy water and trying to remove the eggs from the leaves of our plants, but it is a losing battle. Do you know if their eggs lie dormant in the dirt or perhaps why we keep getting them? I’m wondering if there is a natural way to treat the dirt over the winter or something we can do in the spring to ensure that we don’t get them again? Thanks for any help you can give me. I’m starting a neighborhood gardening club and would love to have some solutions for this.

Claire, my son has been having warts for 3yrs now. The Dr. burns them off but, what can he take naturally to keep from getting them? Please email me

    • Betty says:

An older farmer who lives in our town told me to use salicylic acid on an increasingly larger wart that was on the back of my hand. I did and it worked. I ordered a solution of salicylic acid meant to treat my husband’s psoriasis. I applied it directly to the wart three times daily and covered it with a bandaid. After about two weeks, the wart was gone. It hasn’t returned after almost a year. Hope it will work for you.

    • Razzle says:

Warts are usually caused by a virus. Try L-Lysine and Vitamin C supplements orally. Can also apply L-Lysine topically to the warts.

    • Marilyn says:

Many years ago Ann Landers, (or was it her sister, Dear Abby?) in her advice column, said to rub the inside of a banana peel on a wart many times a day to remove the wart. My sister used castor oil many times a day on a wart on her leg when she was a child. In 2 or 3 weeks one day she realized that her wart was gone. My son got rid of warts on his hand by using a homeopathic remedy for Warts .. should be one in your local health food store.

  61. Sandy says:

    Hi,
I have started to juice fruits and veggies. The question I have is; when juicing takes all the pulp out, does that mean you don’t get enough Fiber in your diet now?

    Thanks!
    Sandy

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Sandy,

Juicing does remove alot of the fiber that you would normally be getting in your fruits and veggies, especially if you remove the pulp. However, as long as you are still getting fiber in other areas of your diet (grains, legumes, etc,) you should be fine. I still recommend eating fruit/vegetables whole as well just to stay balanced πŸ™‚

I read your article about natural remedies for nail fungus. I got fungus under my big toenail after I fell off my bike and the nail got a small hole in it. I don’t take any medications and I tried EVERY natural remedy known, including the ones you list. (probably 100’s…) After a year, it had gotten so much worse that the nail was only attached by the skin around it and I was certain I would lose the nail. And then I stumbled on a phrase in an article about something else: fungus can’t grow on salt. Here is what finally worked for me: Scrub with baking soda and warm water to get the crusty stuff out from under the nail, dry it and pack it with himilayan pink salt and dab some coconut oil on the nail/skin to keep it soft and to work more of the salt as deep into the gap as possible. It stings a little at first, but it works. Within a week, the nail was growing back at the root pink and healthy! I was so desperate and discouraged and this really worked. And of course I don’t tell anyone because who wants to talk about their nail fungus! I have never seen it written anywhere before or since – pretty sure I invented this cure. Haha.

    Hi Claire,

I usually keep two glasses of water right beside my bed so I can drink them first thing upon waking up without getting out of bed (takes me half an hour just to even THINK about moving!)

You mentioned a good start to the day would be warm water with lemon and apple cider vinegar. Do you think I could squeeze the lemon into my glass of water and let it sit on my nightstand overnight and still get the same effect? Should I add the apple cider vinegar in the morning, or the night before? And the water will be room temperature by the morning, that’s ok right?

I’m asking because I’m not sure about how the fermentation process works with vinegar and lemons, and I’ve heard that squeezing a lemon into your water too soon could mean it has turned to sugar by the time you consume it (?)

Your thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

    Vanny from Victoria, BC

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Vanny,

Good for you for keeping up your water intake! It should be fine to squeeze the lemon into your water at night and drink it in the morning, although it may not taste as “fresh” as if you did it the morning of, you should still get the same benefits. I haven’t heard of lemon turning into sugar after being put in water, nor have I ever experienced anything that would indicate it does so. As far as leaving the vinegar sit overnight I don’t think that would be problematic either, but again, it might not taste as fresh. Personally, I would add it the morning of just to be on the safe side. Apple cider vinegar does not need to be refrigerated, so you could keep a bottle by your bedside and add it before you have to drag yourself out of bed πŸ˜‰

    • Claire (Everyday Roots) says:

      Hi Gale,

Your dog sounds like a gem! I can certainly relate to how you feel-after making it through a particularly severe bout of depression I got my dog to give me a reason to get out of bed in the morning and get me out of the house. I don’t know what I would do without him, he’s done more for me than any medication ever has!
As far as dealing with cataracts, your best bet is probably to get her checked out by a vet. Whether or not you opt to follow through with the suggested treatment, they can evaluate the stage that the cataracts are in and see if they are causing her any pain or discomfort (which is probably the most important thing to you.) They’ll also check for tear production to make sure that the cataracts aren’t “hypermature” (the cataract dries and shrivels and can cause more damage to the eye than just a mature cataract can.) It’s possible that your dog is experiencing nuclear sclerosis, which is a hardening of the lens that happens as a natural part of a dogs aging process. It looks similar to cataracts (the eye will turn blue) but doesn’t impede vision or require treatment, but its always good to get it checked to make sure.

If it turns out she has lost vision, or she will, there are a few things to do. While there aren’t natural treatments to get rid of cataracts, you can still help her stay comfortable in her environment. First, remember that dogs rely on sight less than humans can. Their vision is not as good as ours to begin with, and they rely strongly on things like their acute sense of smell and hearing to figure out surroundings. Make sure that you keep clear paths for her to follow in the house (ie moving furniture out of the way) and you can try placing different textured rugs or carpets throughout the house to solidify her sense of which room she is in. Keep any sharp corners on coffee tables and the like padded in case she bumps into them. She will quickly “map” the house and yard and know where she is, so avoid moving furniture around a lot. Setting up scent markers to different rooms can help, and also warn of a “danger zone” such as stairs.

I hope this helped some, its always tough when our companions start to age, but it sounds like you are a wonderful pet parent πŸ™‚

    Hi,
I just wanted to send some positive thoughts your way πŸ™‚ I love what your doing and I look at your Facebook page daily. I was looking or remedies for ear infections, can you recommend some to me?

I read all your recommendations on fleas for dogs and am going shopping tommorrow. What do you know about getting rid of the egss they lay in the house? Does using your recommdations and then vacumming every day for two weeks work? Do you also have to wash all blankets or anything they have touched? Does it also help to feed the dog garlic?

  90. Finita says:

    Hello Claire,
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. While trying to take a natural approach I started drinking hot water with lemon in the morning, I continued this for several days until I started breaking out not just on my face but all over my body. I don’t understand if this is a way my body getting rid of toxins or if I’m just allergic to lemons?

    • Claire Goodall says:

That’s no fun! Do you have a reaction when you come in contact with any other lemon products like lemonade or the fruit itself? If not, than I think it would be almost impossible for it to be a reaction to the juice. Was it like acne or a rash? Diet doesn’t usually affect acne, but if you were indeed allergic than a rash or hives would be quite possible. Hope this helps some!

  92. Daryl says:

    Hi,

I have tried several of your flea remedies for my 2 Golden Retrievers and it seems to be working. I really like the idea of the bandana and I put the lemon juice in a small spray bottle and that works well. The problem now is the itching, particularly at night. Any ideas for spot treatments?

I have a wart on the tip of my nose. It started when I was sick and from blowing my nose so much it had gotten a split and then a wart came about. I hate it!! Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated. THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE!!!! GOD BLESS!!!

  94. Lora P says:

Saw your honey and onion for sore throats. My grandmother always had a jar of honey and onions sitting on the back of the wood stove. She cooked the honey and onions until the onions were transparent. When we went to visit Gramma we always got a big tablespoon full of honey and onions. Very rarely did we ever get colds. The one person talked about molasses. My mother used to send us down to the place that has horse feed as they always had a 45 gallon drum of molasses there that was mixed with the horse feed. We could bring back a large jar – we called it black strap molasses-and consumed a tablespoon daily. I was great and I will take molasses to this day. I am 70 years young and don’t get colds or the flue and am never sick – touch wood. Thanks for your blog, it brings back memories. The old home remedies are always better than drugs.

My husband has the worse stomach issues. I have finally balanced our families diet with goo grains, high protein, lean meats, excessive use of flax and chia seeds, coconut oil along with several other things that I have changed to get my kids and my husbands stomach aligned (my kids are my step kids and they came from a very nutritionally deprived home). But we just moved and I was able to keep on top of my kids diet but not my husbands and he is all out of whack now. Basically he has extreme diarrhea like painful and frequent issues in that department! I have tried everything and nothing is working. Any suggestions??

Hi Claire, I drink coffee daily…sometimes twice even, but I’m trying to whiten my teeth. What do you suggest I do witwithout having to give up one of my favorite parts of my day? Thanks in advance!

  100. Londa Craven says:

I hope you send this to my email, I have a few questions, first about the dogs, I have tried everything for these fleas, I think they are getting them for the cats outside and I am trying to get rid of them My dog has sores on him from biting, I do not know if its from the fleas or allergies, I know he has both, I go to the Vet once a month to get them a shot for their allergies, but now it does not seem to be helping that much I also give them a fish oil tablet everynight and a benedryl. I had a flea collar on them and that did not work, I have used those flea ointments you put on them every 3 months nope. I have tried a couple sprays….I hate seeing them scratch our lab has sores above his tail from biting himself cause he itches. My pug goes around in circles to scratch her rear. I bath them with flea shampoo every week. So I will try some of your ideas. Now I glanced that someone has headaches. I have suffered from chronic migraines since the age of 6. I have just started Botox injections. You have any ideas. I cannot seem to find a pillow that I do not wake up with a stiff neck and migraine. I do not want to spend $60.00 on that one you see on TV. I am on disability that is how severe my migraines are. Anyways, I hope to see a few suggestions from you and maybe to help me sleep and heck while I am at it Fibromyalgia and I also have alergies…So sorry to bug you, I could keep going, but you might get to bored….

  101. Rebecca says:

Do you think I could use your dog shampoo recipe to get rid of fleas in carpet?

  102. ANNIE says:

Wow! Thank You. I came online for heartburn problems (which I rarely have). All your suggestions were helpful–maybe one of two or three websites I felt I could trust. I took lemon balm , calcium and apple cider vinegar. It was funny, because I googled that I need help with heartburn, and all these commercial things came up (yeah we have noticed those yellow commercial things from google—not evil exactly—it is just we don’t need it. Pharmaceutical BS is not where its at. (Well there might be some good there–but I’m not sure–probably comes from the rain forests).

Us nature girls. I”ve never had experienced anything unhealthy . I am 50 yrs. young. And I’ve been watching this awesome documentary. It is called “Growing up in the Universe”. Richard Dawkins (from 23 yrs; ago) . I know he claims himself an atheist. I dunno–I guess I’m kind of a Existentialist, Christian, Buddhist, Pagan. What I love about this doc is his teachings about teaches us being biological and connected–BASICALLY NATURE.

I loved your introduction about Minnesota–especially about the cabin, your beautiful pic. I grew up in SF Bay Area and my escape as a teen was Tahoe (Desolation Wilderness) and Yosemite and the Sierra Club on Donner Summit. Awesome back country. Carrying 35 lbs. on my back and celebrating the end of the day with an icy plunge.
Take Care, I wish you the best of luck with your website and trying to help folk.

    • Claire Goodall says:

Annie, thank you for your kind message! I’ll have to check out that documentary. And it sounds like you had some pretty amazing retreats to go to. Being close to nature like that can’t be replaced by staring at a screen -or any other modern day activity really-and I sure hope more kids these days will discover the wonders of it as well. Having those special places to go to is also so healing, for both the body and the soul πŸ™‚

  103. Tom says:

Claire, my name is Tom, and I have been interested in natural remedies for about a year now. I live in NE Georgia on 25 acres with my wife of 30 years. We are both still working pretty much full time. I have had my own business for 28 years. I am in the transportation industry. I drive for a living. I have to follow a lot of federal guidelines, and more every year. Last year my blood pressure creeped up on me and my doctor would not pass my DOT physical. I got a 30 day permit to drive since my blood pressure really wasn’t that high. When I went back I passed and was given a 1 year health card. My doctor recommended I go on blood pressure medicine, I told him “no way”. I was just curious if you knew of any natural remedies for my problem. I don’t do pharmaceuticals. I am 60 years old and have never had any health issues. I will retire from my current business before I have to start taking BP medicine, and I’m not ready to retire. Thanks for any suggestions you may have, Tom

The thing is I still feel hungry after a couple of hours I had a meal, and I’m trying to stay in a strict diet since I’m trying to lose weight, my goal is to be toned with a bit of muscle. Can you please help me?

    • Claire Goodall says:

If your goal is help reduce overeating, try a tablespoon of coconut oil-before dinner if you struggle with portions, or after if you find yourself craving something once the meal is over. It truly suppresses appetite, almost to the point of being unnerving!

I was just reading about gas or bloat, and I was actually amazed you didn’t have to one I love, I know of most the ones you have but the one I swear by for gas is, a shot of olive oil (works for altitude sickness too), it doesn’t taste the best so I normal have apple juice as a before and after, but it works great and super super quick!!

  112. Abby says:

Thank you so much for the acne treatment tips! I’m trying out the cinnamon and honey mixture right now. I’m glad to see that you are posting this kind of medicinal information online, it’s normally pretty hard to come by. I actually hope to become a doctor one day but use natural remedies for patients rather than harmful medicines. Do you know of any colleges that offer up classes where I could learn more about this stuff and how to use it?

    • Claire Goodall says:

Hooray Abby! I think it’s awesome that you want to pursue alternative/integrated medicine, and more and more universities are embracing it. University of Arizona, for example, has a solid program for integrative medicine, as does the University of Maryland. There are schools just for this holistic medicine and lots of courses online as well. You will figure out as you go on if you want to specialize in something like aromatherapy or herbalism, or tackle the whole of alternative/integrative medicine. Just to clarify-integrative medicine is different than alternative as it incorporates alternative health practices with conventional medicine, however this is what most “true”-for lack of a better word-universities are offering. You can get a master herbalist degree, but I like the idea of integrative medicine. You get to work with patients on a holistic level, but you also understand other methods as well, which makes you quite the force! Understanding modern day medicine and how it works can also only strengthen your knowledge of how and why a natural alternative works or is preferable. I hope this helped some, best of luck on your journey!

    Hi Claire,
I just stumbled upon your site as I am looking for some good home remedy for my flat wart problem on my legs.
All if the remedies I have found (including yours) appear to be for treatment of individual warts or small areas.
My problem is I have these small white flat warts all over both my legs so I need some sort of cream or something I can lather on overnight.
I’ve tried to find a ‘recipe’ to make an apple cider vinegar cream but haven’t found anything.
Unfortunately I chose the ignore them and they will go away route a few years ago but all they have done is spread. Shaving I guess !
Now I am on a mission to clear this problem so please help if you can !!
    Many thanks

Assuming you don’t have any negative reactions to the ingredients, you can really drink as much as you like. I suggest starting 1-2 large glasses a day-there’s always too much of a good thing! And the electrolyte drink is wonderful after exercise πŸ™‚

    Hi!
I suffer from Humidity Headaches, as soon as the weather warms up and the humidity rises I’m in trouble! Over the counter pain relief helps a little but not enough to warrant the amount I have to take to get any kind of effective relief. Pressure on the temples and bridge of the nose helps and I’m wondering if there is anything you can suggest I can rub on my temples as walking around with my fingers on them isn’t very useful!
I have tried the peppermint oil you suggested in your headache blog but this made my eyes sting like crazy. I can see it might be effective if you can lay down and close your eyes but these are so frequent and regular I need to find a way to function everyday.
Thanks for any advise you can give!

  124. Janet says:

    Hi Claire,
two things I would like to add. caprylic acid for arthritis and B vitamins for warts.
I read once there is a connection between yeast overgrowth and arthritis so I took 2 capsules of caprylic acid for 3 days to kill off yeast overgrowth and still do it when I need to and my joints have been fine ever since. I can tell when I need to take them by the fact that hunger will become very urgent and demanding, usually after I have had sugary foods. then I know the yeast is taking over and I treat. you MUST drink a LOT of water to flush the toxins while you do this. if you get headaches then you have been foolish and not flushed the toxins and must stop taking the capsules until you are better.
I had plantar warts starting to grow on my neck and under my eyes. I started taking B vitamin pills for something else and a month later I noticed the warts were gone. they came back if I stopped taking supplements for any length of time so I take them almost regularly.

I’ve been doing some research on Huntington’s Disease!! I have this disease and there is no cure as of yet. There are some ways of relieving symptoms such as Trehelose sugar, and/or Creatine. Yet these help with the neurological breakdown of the disease, and muscle fatigue etc. There are many other cognitive issues with this disease that can sometimes cause spurts of insanity, or feeling really anxious or really tired and drained. Also very irritable or depressed, and have a misunderstanding of many conversations, events, and everyday life thoughts… what if any can I take to help with all these symptoms that will get worse and worse before finally death within 10-20 years.

  126. Dina says:

    Claire,

What are your thoughts on over-the-counter melatonin as a sleep-aid? My new doctor is attempting to wean me off certain prescription medications (purportedly to help me sleep and otherwise), and recommended taking 5 mg of melatonin an hour before bedtime. Don’t get me wrong – I am excited about this new doctor’s approach to getting rid of unnecessary medications and her outlook on alternative ways to maintain overall health and well-being – many of the same ideas you have. Of course, melatonin is something our brain naturally produces to maintain regular sleep and wake cycles, and stress (and other factors) can inhibit the production of such, but I am just not sure about replacing it with another pill, even if it is a supplement rather than a prescription. Thanks in advance for any advice/information you may be able to provide.

Hi Claire how are you? My name is Stacie and for the last few years I have not been feeling myself & as time goes on i notice more & more symptoms are adding up while the doctors are saying that all is well basically calling me a hypochondriac, indirectly! Here are some of my symptoms, I am sincerely hoping that you can help. Thanks
body rashes, fatigue, joint pain, back pain, stomach pain, food sensitivity, severe sinus issues, dry mouth, athletes foot, weight loss, appetite loss, brain fog, headaches, memory loss, shortness of breath, I’m always so cold yet my skin is extremely warm & temp. is normal…

    • Claire Goodall says:

I am sorry to hear you have not been well! Have you tried visiting a different doctor? It’s not ok if your current doc isn’t listening to you. I myself am not a doctor and because you have so many symptoms (and I can’t see you in person) I really think your best bet is to see another health care provider. Don’t rule out anything psychological yet-the mind is the most powerful tool we have, and it can effect the body in so many ways. This does NOT mean you are a hypochondriac-the problems are not in your head, but real, regardless of whats causing them. If you suffered from panic attacks or anxiety, for example, that can have a huge impact on your health in a variety of ways. Keep an open mind to possibilities and solutions and find a doctor who will as well πŸ™‚ I hope you figure something out, and let me know if you have anymore questions!

Great info and excellent site too. Lost my precious Amstaff to the the dreaded IMHA auto-immune disease contracted by the poisons of heart worm and flea and tick meds.I hope none of you have to go thru that. Most conventional vets dont know a lot about it, most that I used during my nightmare were clueless and one even missed the very low hemecrit level. The disease has an 80% mortality rate. After all said and done 4k in the hole and my baby died in 4 days and when her time came she was at an animal hosp. and she died in the middle of the night 40 miles from me with out me holding her,I never got closure and for a complete year was a mess and lost 40lbs due to her death. It came out of no where and just knocked me on my butt.
I wanted to know if you know of any herbs or holistic measures for heart worm. A new joy is in my life now and as always I dont rescue them, THEY RESCUE ME!!I

Would love to let her be my 1st all natural treated dog other than the rabies vac. Im not going with the cocktail of vacs these murderers try to sell you only the state regulated rabies. She is 3.5 yrs old and has all of her vacs previously before me so Im not buying the garbage of “Well your making her life worse by not protecting her”…..YEAH RIGHT!!
Another concern I have is ,shouldnt we be using essential oils that can be ingested? there are only 1 or 2 that claim you can ingest, but most tell you external only,so what happens when furry baby licks her self when I apply my home made flea and tick repellant/killer?.I use Theives cleaner to bathe her in and lemon grass/orange oil for her flea/tick spray and boy does that stop them dead.My only down side is I have to buy Young oils and Im not a distributor nor do I want to be one, but their oils can be ingested, that is their claim to fame, all others NO WAY..One might want to consider that with the essential oils route.BTW Young oils are EXPENSIVE but as I mentioned they can be ingested.

Have you known any one who might have encountered a problem of an animal ingesting the oils by licking their coat.I would love to know if any one who doesnt use the higher end oils and have not encountered any problems with them especially if their animals do lick their coats.
I see you use NOW products ,which I LOVE !! but they say for external use only ,which makes no sense to me because transdermally they are being ingested, any info on this would be very helpful.

Any info anyone might know on the HW holistic remedy and the oils question is very appreciated. Thank you all and especially Claire. πŸ™‚

One I would like to know how or where can I get horsetail? Second has fruit ever been used in the hair tonics? I am as natural as you can get. If not in the hair tonic has fruit been used to clean the hair? What kind? I just love the information I get and you go Claire. Keep up what you’re doing. Hopefully this will go on my face page.

I order from Mountain Rose Herbs, but if you live in the right climate (temperate, moist) you could collect your own, assuming the source is safe and free from any chemical treatment. I am so glad you enjoy the site, feel free to ask anymore questions!

  142. Maiv says:

    Hi Claire!

I just recently followed you and I’m also just starting on looking at herbal medicine. Where do you purchase your seeds or do you forage in the wild and grow them in your own backyard? Also, I’m interested in your parsley and rosemary hair tonic but am finding it difficult to find parsley seeds. Do you happen to know where I might be able to find parsley seeds in the Midwest or even online?

    Thanks!

    • Claire Goodall says:

I am all about the backyard herb gardens! If you can grow it-do it! If that’s not possible, and I can’t get something from a local, trusted source, I tend to order from Mountain Rose Herbs online. When I am in the wild, I LOVE to poke around for anything useful, assuming it’s not detrimental to the species to harvest it. Best of luck in your learning!

Hey Claire thanks alot for this site. Totally forgot about ginger. Need something to stop this annoying gurgling in what I believe is the large intestine. High caloric intake with a metabolism kept on supercharged for working out means eat alot but there’s few options for breakfast if you’re eating Paleo.

  146. melissa eudy says:

Hi Claire, I was researching “how to alleviate air in the intestines” when I came across your page. I’ve had an epiphany of sorts just now. I have had very strong, sharp pains when I eat when I’m on my monthly period for years now. Ive been in bed all day with severe pain all day & at midnight it hit me, Duh it’s AIR!! I don’t know how it gets in there or why It only happens on my monthly, but at least I have identified the problem. Now I need a cure, or better yet a preventative. It’s a pretty rare problem, believe me Ive asked friends about this pain, & only one other lady that i’ve asked has this. However, I’ve found message boards about it, with noone with an answer. Help, please.

  147. Juana says:

Claire is it true that ginger is bad for a person with heart probles, I like the taste od ginger but has a heart attack just wondering thanks

    • Claire Goodall says:

That’s an issue I would address with your doctor to be on the safe side. On one hand, ginger can be great for cardiovascular health. However, I would be wary of it if you have experienced cardiac arrest, as it can lower blood pressure, and may potentially result in an irregular heartbeat if you already have heart problems. Best of luck, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Claire. I love your site and am a big fan of natural approaches to health and well-being. However, I notice that many recipes and instructions require the use of honey. As an ethical vegan, I don’t use honey or any other animal products, so I’m wondering if you might be able to suggest alternatives to honey in your instructions for the readers who are vegan? Thanks very much.

  159. apurva says:

    Hi Claire,

I read your article on home remedies for acne and scars and absolutely loved it!
I had a major breakout after using an oil named regen oil. I had to visit a dermatologist who gave me some oral medicines and a gel for my acne problem. I have been using them from past 2-3 weeks but not satisfied with the results. I started applying rose water and sandalwood paste for my acne and then tomato juice for the scars that my acne has left behind on my face. This has really helped me but I need some quick results; can you suggest me some home remedy for treating acne and scars on oily skin? My work also involves wearing make up everyday and little bit of sun exposure..I would really appreciate if you could take this into consideration and suggest me a solution.
    Thanks

    Hi Claire

I recently came across your website when I was looking for recipes for dog food. I found your healing mash. I have a one year old male boxer named Norwood. I was wondering what you regularly fed your boxer dogs?

    Kind regards
    Monique (moniquecannell@me.com)

    • Claire Goodall says:

Oh my goodness, Norwood! What a fantastic name! Fawn? Brindle? White? I feed my boys a limited ingredient dry food that I have been extremely happy with. I love that you asked this question- dog food is a favorite topic of mine, as I feel many people don’t think to look into what they feed their pets! I am quite picky, and after a long time searching for a high quality, well-balanced, LIT food, I finally found the kind I use now about two years ago. I will also sometimes add raw foods (namely fruits and veggies like chopped up carrot or apple, sometimes a bit of plain scrambled eggs) to mix it up and keep it interesting for them. I dabbled with rotational feeding, but never had much luck with it. I have to say again how much I love the name Norwood. I just want to kiss his squishy boxer face!

Hi Claire: Great advice all around on the sore throat remedies! I was wondering if you have any natural remedies for maintaining vaginal health. I have been suffering with recurrent BV (bacterial vaginitis) for months and I am sick and tired of the antibiotics and antifungals. Seemingly, my body’s (and subsequently vagina’s) PH level is way off. I eat yogurt daily, put a bit of ACV in my drinking water and sometimes a probiotic pill. I’m off to the doctor again today, sigh…. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  166. Patti says:

Hi! I found your article on “make your own calamine lotion” and it shows how to make it with the bentonite clay and such, but it doesn’t say how long to leave it on. It doesn’t seem like something you can have on under clothes, or like something that would be able to be applied before bed or something if you’re itching, so how long can/should you leave it on?

Thanks for the great idea πŸ™‚

I have a specific issue that you may be able to help with. I’ve just been reading your headache remedy page and will be trying some of these ideas. I’m actually pregnant and believe my headaches are caused by hormones. (This current one has been hanging around for weeks!)

Do you have any advice as to which remedy is most likely to work/not work in my situation? I’m also nervous about using some things as there’s so much you’re meant to avoid in pregnancy!

    Hi Claire:
I have been using honey to wash my hair for a couple weeks with great results. I would like to use your honey mouthwash but am wondering if you make it each time you use it or in advance. I read that I can not make my honey shampoo in advance because honey and water mold very quickly – even within a day or two. Do the other ingredients stop this molding process or should I make it daily?

    Thanks for your great articles.

Hi, I just read your article on repelling ants and I am so happy!! I’m vegan and I hate the thought of killing ants and bugs just because they are trying to survive and don’t realize that we don’t want them in our food. I am going to try some of your proposed methods, but I had a question. For the methods that involve spraying/wiping white vinegar or essential oils, should I wipe the area down afterwards? I don’t obviously want to clean away what I just put down to repel the ants, but is it okay to leave just as is (no pets or kids to worry about getting into it!)? Thanks so much, I’m really excited to try this!

Clare: I seldom have constipation except during the dry heat of our summers. It finally dawned on me what was happening. Our skin sweats all the time and our bowels serve to retain or release the water as needed. When its hot we naturally sweat even more, but in this dry heat it evaporates so quickly we may not notice the sweating. Bottom line: I was becoming dehydrated without realizing it. Solution is simple: more water!

    Dear Claire,

I have a black and tan German Shepherd, two actually, my best friends. My boy is my actual service dog and helps me with PTSD, anxiety and panic. I have been going through exposure therapy to help me start going out in the world again, at 45, that is wierd, but, I am excited. I have 13 years behind me finally from a Traumatic Brain Injury and I have survived much pain that never would end and finally a second surgery that was massive, but decreased the pain enough for me to get out of bed again.
I am very good at taking care of my body, and both my dogs are on cooked meats and broth and grain free foods, but my boy is really connected to me and has also become very anxious and with that, has gotten severe heartburn. I am using DGL, Mastic Gum, apple cider vinegar, but I cannot find a root for him or herb that has seemed to help yet? Have you used anything with dogs that they would find in nature and use in this case? I was thinking maybe Peppermint leaf? I do see them eat a mint type of grass out when we hike. Thank you for your webpage.

No medication. I made some of your ginger and turmeric tea and had an Epsom salts bath and voila it’s gone! Brilliant !
Do you have any recipies for an itchy scalp as this is another small problem I would like to address without resorting to nasty chemicals on my head!

Quick question. I’m going to be trying out your flea remedies on my dog, but am wondering if you have any suggestions of ointments I can use on her irritated spots that are showing?

We moved to Seattle from Minnesota last year and this is the first time in her 4 years she has ever had fleas – which have been added to hot spots she has been dealing with. She has been so miserable that she’s pulling patches of hair off to get to the irritating spots. :0(. She is the sweetest dog ( mix of golden lab & Australian shepherd) with a deep black coat and just looks at me with eyes that ask me WHAT is going on and please make it stop!!!

Any further advice you can give on something to put on the sores that have developed because of the combo of Hot Spots and fleas would be very much appreciated.

    Hello Claire,
I have a issue regarding my bloating stomach and I would like to hear your opinion πŸ™‚

Everyday my stomach will bloat to the point where there is no room left, pushing the air out of my stomach. Sometimes this air creates a foul smell, and since I’m a student, this is troublesome. Today is my first day of school and I woke up drinking a warm cup of water, but it happens again 2 hours later.

This really is nerve wrecking and it makes me side track from my studies.
Do you have any advice in which I can use?

  217. Sharon says:

Hi Claire… Read your fantastic article on 7 ways of natural flea protection for your pet. I will be trying most of them but since I already have tea tree oil I wondered if that could be used in place of the lavender or cedar oil used as main ingredient in most of the remedies? Great article! Thank you…Sharon

Hi Claire. Love the site, thanks for what you are doing. Is there a way to add a ‘search’ tool on here? Would sure make finding things a lot easier:=}. Thank you.

    Hello,
I am wondering if you have any remedies for dry scalp. My hair is not the problem and I don’t have dandruff, just a really dry & flaky scalp.
Look forward to hearing from you.

  220. Candace says:

Thank you for offering such a wonderful resource to the public.

It’s very encouraging to see now so many online sources and resources available to those who are searching. Almost 30 years ago I began my search for natural solutions and learning about the causes of dis-eases. Back then we didn’t have the internet at our fingertips, but did have wise sages who had spent their lifetime learning and teaching.

It can be very frustrating trying to help someone who insists on “asking my doctor if these supplements will help me” ….. now I can simply say “Google it” πŸ™‚ They don’t always take the time to do that, but for those who do and thank me later for directing them on a path to self-health, I am grateful. This blog is now 1 of my resources …. thanks again.

    Hi Claire,

Sorry to bother you but my friend is on A LOT of medication and she has been having insomnia for years now is there a natural remedy that could help with her insomnia? She is on too many medications and I’m scared its too much for her.

    • Bryan Nupp says:

Valerian root extract, chamomile tea, lavender oil works wonders for relaxation and a Settled mind. All of these above mentioned remedies and supplements are calming, soothing and right from Nature. Above all, a well balanced yoga or a meditation practice is probably the best way for your friend to begin gaining back her restful nights.. And you could take a few yoga classes together, people love to feel supported during times of change and challenge.

it would be nice if you could help me out πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    GDay Claire~
I am NOT a computer person…. however when in a quagmire with my critters, I suddenly start researching online.

I stumbled upon your home flea remedies, immediately after I found “a” flea on my dog!! Yeah, I know there are must be a million more.. but my heart stopped at the sight of one!

I LOVE your remedies, however I would like to know which of your treatments kill existing fleas versus the preventatives~ THE horse has left the barn, so I need to kill those beasts!!!

I have two boxers, both rescues, and of course both came to be with “special needs”. I hope to be able to look at your website more thoroughly instead of emailing knee jerk concerns! HAHA

Blessed to know that you are there..Thank you Claire Goodall (like Jane)

Hi Claire! I’d like to congratulate you on promoting natural remedies. I use home remedies all the time and I find them extremely helpful. I’d like to ask a few things. My mum suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and she is also a thrombophilic. She has an extended severe and complex medical record. She takes a zillion different medicine for each illness she suffers from and obviously each one interacts with the other. She seems to be finding no comfort and since she suffers of severe insomnia everything is magnified. She takes wolfarin for the thrombosid, she takes pills for the insomnia, she takes anti-inflammatories and pain killers of all sorts. This has caused a severe bowel problem. She has nearly no bowel movement so her discomfort is to the maximum. Her mood and her psychology in general is bad and there is times that i feel she is even losing it. Too much on one’s shoulder to carry! What can she do to ease her pain? Secondly, what can help with insomnia and bowel obstruction? And what should she do in order to stop taking all these different pills and finally find some peace? Please anything you can advise us would be extremely appreciated.

    • Claire Goodall says:

I am glad you’ve found relief with the essential oils-they truly are incredible in how healing they are. As for the coconut oil, any organic, raw, extra virgin coconut oil from a sustainable source should do the trick πŸ˜‰ I hope it helps!

I know there is many ways to lose weight without exercising, but what do you suggest is the best to do with great outcomes. I came to this site while I was researching toenail fungus which I had been treating with hydrogen peroxide. It’s not getting worse but I am going to try the apple cider vinegar recipe. As I was reading the posts, I read about a woman suffering from acid reflux. I don’t get it very often but a few years ago, my sister-in-law recommended celery. Since I like celery, I don’t have a problem eating it whenever, and I don’t know if it will help any one out there with acid reflux, but if I know I’m going to eat something that might give me heartburn or something similar, I eat half a stalk before I eat and then another after. Although, I would recommend eating more before and/or after and throughout the day. I wonder if the people at Wing Stop or its customers realize that the celery they serve actually helps some of them to prevent heartburn from the spices they use on their wings? By the way, I even put celery stalks in an pickle jar with the pickle juice. I love pickle juice and I’ve also read that drinking pickle juice occasionally helps prevent or relieve problems with sore throats. I’m pretty sure it probably helps with other health issues as well. Eat more celery!

    Hey there Claire,
I had a question concerning my puppy. I had recently read an article on this website suggesting how to remove fleas on our dogs. I thought they had great ways to handle fleas but I was unsure which to use on my dog. My dog is quite small (5-8lbs), he’s a Maltese. I agree that over-the-counter medication is not the ideal way to cure as it is overpriced and can cause side-affects. So my question was which natural technique should I use on my small puppy? Thank you very much for your time! I look forward to your response.

  258. Carla says:

Hi Claire, in you decongestant/expectorant recipe, you give good reasoning for using honey; if I want to use something else, however, would rice malt syrup, maple syrup or coconut nectar (or something else) be a good substitute? (Fructose malabsorption causes me to choose low-fructose foods over high ones, and honey is a high one. ) Thanks for your guidance, Carla

Hello – I am a Claire too. I wonder if it is in the nature of all Claire’s to be inquisitive and love nature. I am from the Appalachian mountain change in Georgia. You have my email if you would like to chat further. Not to many Claire’s in the world. Neat to meet one with such similar interests.

    • shontel says:

      HI Claire
your morning sickness may have gone by now (it often does by the 3rd month…but not always!)
If its still a problem…make a meal of chicken giblets (the chickens organs that are contained within the plastic bag inside a cooking chicken) Some people just cook it up by frying or baking as is. If this idea is not for you I suggest you cook up the giblets with a meal of chicken & vegetables & rice etc…which will disguise it completely. The minerals in the organ meats will provide your body with the minerals it is lacking (hence the morning sickness). And you will find within one or two of these meals morning sickness is no longer an issue
Re the Iron Supplement. my guess is you are probably taking Ferrous Sulphate Iron tabs. They are very well absorbed, but cause very uncomfortable constipation. A good solution is
      a. Vegetable Juices: 1/3 carrot, 1/3 any dark green non sulphur vegies (spinach, parsley, celery…NOT..cabbage, brocolli) & a large green apple to sweeten it up…Lots of iron in the dark green vegies, easy for the body to absorb.
      b. Ferrous Gluconate Tabs: Only 30% of the iron is absorbed, however they are not only non-constipating…they help with easier bowel movements.. The pharm will have a bottle of ferrous gluconate iron tabs tucked away on the back shelf if you ask.
      No side effects at all.
      Good luck

Hi Claire, I have been reading on the internet that lemons are toxic to cats, I really want to try your remediy for fleas but I am worried about the lemons. I want to try the holistic route for my fur babes, can you advise me please it is really important that I use holistic remedies, for I have tried all the vets flea treatments, and Frontline does not work, the fleas are getting immune to it. I think we are getting a new breed of fleas and ticks that are immune to the commercial treatments.

  273. Julie Henry says:

Love the home remedies. We’ve been homesteading for about 7 years and 90% off grid. I’ve been studying medicinals for the last couple of years and I was pleased to find some new things I hadn’t tried on your page. I would add one thing that has been a Godsend for us during this cold and flu season to your list of remedies. Onion poultice. Saute a chopped up yellow onion in olive oil. Wrap it in a cloth and place it on the chest of the person with the congestion. It is important to place an additional cloth barrier between the onion poultice wrap and the skin as it will be quite hot to begin with. The longer you can keep it on the chest, the greater the benefit. I got bronchitis between paychecks and couldn’t get into the doctor. I was well on the way to pneumonia. I tried the onion poultice and it worked wonders. Hope this helps someone else.

Any thoughts you might have as I embark upon this journey would be appreciated. Take care!

    Claire,
I am so excited to have stumbled across your site! It was 4th site down when I googled “flea medicine for dogs”…I hadn’t added natural yet! I’m 30 years young and just now really getting into the natural living. I am using essential oils, Himalayan salt lamp, coconut oil, raw honey, sea salts and vitamin e oil so far! I am purchasing your book as soon as I can financially. I am curious about tx for anxiety/panic disorder. I have done a lot of research on natural things to do and I have instructional cd’s etc. my concern is getting OFF the medication I am on. I have been able to wean myself off of the anti depressants I have been prescribed…but during a bad episode of transitioning from an expensive anti depressant to a cheaper one (many years ago) my doctor added klonopin. Of course it worked. Unfortunately I was very unaware of the long term effects of trying to get off of it. I’ve tried twice. I read water titration is the best route to take but I don’t really understand it and have yet to find a breakdown on how to do it. Oddly, klonopin treats seizures but also causes brain tremors if you try to wean off of it too quickly, I can literally feel this effect if I miss one day. I am in an extremely low dose and have maintained that lowest dosage for more than 5 years. I am really over it. I can’t go anywhere or do anything without knowing the medication is with me. Do you have any suggestions or references or anything that might help?? Thank you so much in advance for reading all this πŸ™‚ I think your site is amazing and I can’t wait to explore the book!!

If you will write me back, I will do that privately.

Hi, does eating raw ginger help to cure cough? Secondly, can adding honey to warm water lemon juice reduce d efficacy off lemon juice, especially, when taken with d aim of burning belly fat? Thanks in anticipation.

    • Susan says:

Hello, Raw ginger is supposedly good for digestion and tummy problems (though not super for our issues), but I’ve never heard for cough. Elderberry syrup can work very well for coughs (4 Tbls per day? but after meals to avoid stomach upset), as does saline in a nebulizer, regularly while healing.

  279. Josephine says:

    Yes Claire,
I was just wondering if I could boil my fruits/veggies that I plan on using for detoxification, in spring water, in something other than anything metallic, strain it, cool it,than pour it over then same type of fruits/veggies, in a drinking vessel, would I get a good result/benefit from that? I am trying to get back on the health trail again and I want some thing different and new. I’ve tried it all, so now I just want to get back to the simple basics of things. Like just walking to enjoy the scenery, which will help me to exercise without me ‘realizing it’s exercise, eating healthy, without realizing it’s healthy, etc. You understand right? Thank you.

My name is Teresa. I am currently, reading your article and would like to have some answers. In May of 2013, I have been diagnosed with Arthritis. I have it in both of my knees. I have been taking Diclofenac for the pain. I also, have incontinence and am taking Oxybutynin for an overactive bladder problem that I have been having for the past few years now. I am 52 years old. If that’s not enough, I’ve been also, diagnosed with having thyroid problems and am taking Levothyroxin for it. Then, there’s this thought of taking prescribed medication for fiber,. Yes, at times, I find myself, not being regulated and am having to take the fiber pills. My sister and I both, take the Levothyroxin for thyroids. We’d both would love to be off of it if there is another way of taking better care of our thyroids. If you have any other alternatives, I”m all ears and will pass on any information to her. I have been fighting with trying to stay on my medications because, I have been told that once we are on it, there’s no going off of it. Is this true? If so, please, do enlighten me on this matter. If not, then, I have been told that I must do whatever it takes to get back on my medication and to stay on it. Please, your assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Claire!

I recently tried the honey and cinnamon mask for acne, and it’s already had an effect. It brought down some of the swelling that I had from my acne. After I washed it off it did leave my face a little red, but it cleared up right away. Loved it. Looking into buying your book and finding out more natural remedies and things you have! πŸ™‚

    Hi Claire,

Despite the deep woods of northern Wisconsin being my home, I grew up in a “strictly science” environment and was always taught to be skeptical of traditional remedies. Not being a big fan of pharmaceuticals/artificial compunds and their numerous side effects I found myself seeking other solutions as I encountered maladies. Armed with a solid education of basic scientific principles I was able to determine WHY some traditional remedies worked and why others were basically just old wives’ tales. While I haven’t viewed your ENTIRE site, what I have seen gives solid advice and isn’t just a bunch of garbage like “stand in light of the moon for three days with a clove of garlic tied to your knee” or somesuch nonsense.

I don’t claim to be a scientist by any means, merely a lover of the scientific method and knowledgeable of basic physical principles – among them, an understanding of the conditions in which viruses, bacteria, and fungi thrive. I’m impressed by the veracity of your treatments… that might not seem like much, but in this day and age of pseudoscience, misleading media, and sponsored solutions it’s nice to see a “natural solution” site which actually offers scientifically sound advice and isn’t just trying to sell homeopathic snake oils.

You are a beautiful person and what you are doing is wonderful; I sincerely hope that you maintain your fantastic dedication to advising others in accordance with natural remedies whose means of affect actually have a basis in reality. Please, please, PLEASE don’t fold under pressure to compromise your integrity for the purpose of fame or fortune… it may seem like a thankless job at times, but be aware that there are those of us who have boundless appreciation for what you’re doing.

    Hi Claire,

I was just wondering… are there any natural cures for depression that pregnant women can take? My mom used to take St. John’s Wort, and it seemed like it helped for her… but I’ve been advised that’s not good to take when nursing or pregnant. I heard that bananas can help lift mood (I don’t remember what’s in there, but some kind of vitamin that’s supposed to help). Are there any other natural foods that help with depression or anxiety? I haven’t been struggling with it lately, but just in case I start struggling with it this pregnancy, I wanted to have a plan ready. πŸ™‚

    Thanks,

    Jenn

Hi, thanks very much for the information you have provided. Giving out lots of useful and helpful information to help us sufferers of heartburn and GERD. I have been suffering with GERD for some time. Some nights are horrible. Waking up choking because food seemed to work its way back up into my throat/mouth. Very scary and also exhausting as it will take me a good 4 to 5 hours for everything to “calm” down so to speak.. enough time I suppose for the food to digest and leave the stomach. I try to be very careful of what I eat, and when.. the wen is the most relevant..I eat too late last evening and then went to bed maybe 2 hours later.. lying down is the culprit of course. I knew I was taking a chance eating later but it was a crazy type of day and I finally was able to sit down and have a proper meal around 8pm.. that being said, I thought, well, maybe I will be OK as I was not eating anything that would be a “trigger food/beverage” for me.. like chocolate, wine, spicy or greasy foods..but that thinking proved me wrong.. I woke up in a jolt as food what choking me out of my sleep.. very strange.. there was no ACID but there was alot of discomfort (bloating and discomfort) including pain in chest area.. not something new for me when I do have an attack of GERD. This time was different however, no acid burning but plenty of disgesting and discomfort.. took a Zantac straight away, and Gaviscon.. It took some time for the combination of the two to kick in and was left feeling so very discouraged.. My only lesson I have learned (at 53 years of age) is the WHEN you eat/how much before bedtime and not always WHAT you eat is crucial in avoiding GERD.. still learning….

Thank you again for the useful information you have provided.. I like the mustard idea and Ginger Root iremedy and Chamomille tea πŸ™‚

    Hi Claire,

Do you know any remedies for nail fungus? I have it on my thumb nail. I saw four doctors for it. My primary dr, a dermatologist, a hand surgeon and an infectious disease dr. I ended up on a treatment that was supposed to last for four month. The side effects were horrendous, so I stopped taking it.

I tried Tea Tree Oil, but I had an allergic reaction to it. I’m terribly frustrated. I don’t know what else to try.

    Any suggestions?

Hello Claire, I came across your website while searching for at home remedies for my cold. I feel like I’m popping a pill for one thing or another on a daily basis and I’m thinking that can’t be good for me. I have to say, I’m a skeptic when it comes to natural health and have mostly turned to medicines to feel better. When I take something for my cold OTC, like Alka Selzer Cold, I’m feeling better rather quickly and can go about my day. So I’m just wondering how quickly and effective the natural cold remedies work? Thanks!

I’m in my first year of high school, and have been dealing with knee pain for 4 years 8 months. Though the doctors have found nothing wrong with it, I’ve done physical therapy twice(each time for over ten weeks) had 4 to 5 X-rays and a MRI. Not to count all the doctor visits. The pain is unbearable, and many a times, I have found myself in tears, and once had an anxiety attack due to the pain. Is there any home remedies, that are sure to help? I’ve tried, heating, icing, exercise, espon salt, but have found no cure for the pain. Everything I have looked at costs money or I don’t have it.
    Thanks πŸ™‚

    Hi Claire,

This is my first time here. Thank you for posting the info on flees for dogs. I’ve had a very stressful day today, I think my dog has flees well she has something. I saw her biting like the base of her tale, so I said let me take a look. She’s a Westie and I see like dirt on her so I grab her to figure out what it is. I asked my daughter to help me Ugh, I see something crawling on her now I’m freaking out. I grabbed her an drove to my groomer for a flee bath, I don’t even know what she has I’m devastated. I’m over reacting right????? Well they couldn’t fit her in so they suggested I put frontline and give her a bath tomorrow with a flee shampoo. She’s so great, I have her in the bathroom (I have carpet) she’s been napping all afternoon she has to know something is not right. From your post I already did the bandana and tomorrow when I bathe her I will give her the last shampoo with the lemon juice from your post as well. Please help I don’t want her to be uncomfortable but I need to take care of her. Please help I’ll take all the advise I can get I’ve never had any of these issues dogs or cats.

    Thanking you in advance

Have you heard any feedback on if the honey & cinnamon mask really works? I’ve tried countless acne solutions & chemicals to get rid of my acne and nothing has ever worked or even helped for that matter. I understand acne is not the end of the world but boy am I tired of it! I just want to find a good, healthy solution for my skin!

    • john says:

I use raw honey and baking soda. 2 table spoons of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of honey and scrub it on leave sit for 30 minutes and wash it off and it pulls the oils out and you might get more acne for the first week as it pulls the oils out but after they are out you should be able to do this twice a week and it’ll keep you good.

    Hi Claire

I’m not sure how I ended up on your site, actually, but you seem wonderful and knowledgeable and there’s a comment section… Would you be able to make some recommendations for learning more about herbs and their healing/natural remedy properties? I work in a spice shop, around a lot of herbs, so I’m trying to start there, but really I’m interested in learning anything and everything about growing my own plants and about the ancient medicine behind things juxtaposed with the scientific information the era has to offer, and how all of that can combine into a fulfilling lifestyle as a pretty rad hermit witch with a huge garden.
I’m sharing my dreams, here, dude.
But yeah, I just want to learn everything. So if you have any personal suggestions on good ways to go about learning everything there is to currently know about natural healing, OR if you know ways to discover knowledge that isn’t already known about natural healing… it’d be appreciated.

In any case, stumbling across this site and your page gave me a lot of hope and greatly improved my worldview and certainty of my life’s path. All without knowing how I got here! The strangeness of the universe at work. I literally live for it.

    Hope you’re doing well! πŸ™‚
